finally got a gsp puppy

Post by s223196 » Sun Sep 27, 2015 4:24 pm

our family finally picked up our first GSP puppy, a female 7 weeks old now. Working on house breaking now, but what and when should we be thinking about other training. We will hunt some grouse and maybe quail and would really like to shed hunt with her too. This a big commitment just trying not to make any really bad mistakes.

She is a baby and will be for quite a while. Spend the next 6 months at least teaching her to be a well behaved puppy and a couple of times a week if possible take her for a slow quiet walk in a fiels where she can explore off leash.

Congratulations on your first GSP.

They are a wonderful breed and your going to have many frustratingly wonderful days ahead w/her..a sense of sense humor is a must with a GSP as they are what they are..full of spunk & tons of smarts. Something that makes you crazy with frustration today is likely the very same thing you will endearingly recall at some point down the road because a GSP has a way of becoming uniquely yours over time.

Stick to the basics and do not hurry things.

Enjoy all of the firsts that pup happens upon b/c pups curiosity and reaction to new things is a very rewarding thing to witness. Use a little common sense..teach pup how to use her own head for problem solving and that you are the greatest ally in pups life..these are very very smart dogs and nuance will reap tremendous reward in the long run.

Good luck & enjoy your new pup!

Thanks for the replies. She does have a bundle of energy, but we expected it, we researched the breed for over a year.

Beautiful Pup! Enjoy, I am on my third GSP now and I wouldn't trade them for anything. They grow FAST so enjoy the puppy stage. For a tip, daily exercise will make life easier.

Here is my pup Jaeger. Now 11 months old and over 70lbs.

Is that a DK or GSP? Just wondering since it looks all black.

He is an all black pure breed GSP. Got him out of PowerPointers in Oklahoma. Everyone thinks he is a black lab.
