young pup

Post by ruffbritt4 » Mon Oct 05, 2015 3:14 pm

So, this weekend is the junior pheasant season. It is my last year as a junior, and my dad is going to take our dog with 2 of his friends sons and I will be going by myself with my puppy. My question is if I plan on hunting her on grouse, would it be okay to take her as it will be her first hunt? I think it would be good as there will be birds, and i can knock them down when handled properly. I plan on avoiding any other groups of people, and the game lands we go on has a lot of area. Thanks
Edit: the other option would be to run her on grouse.

It should be okay. Just let the pup chase birds and have fun. Im doing the same thing with my english setter this weekend but a real pheasant hunt, and im only gonna do a couple actual drives with him, otherwise just when we limit out let him find birds. Try to get him/her to point and hold for you to flush the bird. And depending on its age you could even take him/her with the others for a bit to let it run with the older britts.

When you knock down a pheasant, make sure it is dead as one can spur and flog a pup and dependent upon the dog...it can make them wonder just a bit ....where the fun is.
It really depends upon the dog and the situation....I would tho choose that over grouse, if amping up interest or reenforcing training is to be involved...just for the greater likelyhood of predicatble action and actions.

Mountaineer, I thought the same thing set her up for success to point, hold, and get a bird in her mouth.

8 months old - go and have a great time. Pup is at the perfect age to learn a lot about birds. Let us know how pup does . I assume these are planted pheasant?( junior season).

But only juniors get to hunt for that week end? That's a great idea.

That's correct, it's open before the other seasons
