Need help finding GSP breeder in the Southeast

Post by tckelsey » Tue Oct 06, 2015 8:49 am

Hey guys,

Im looking for any suggestions/recomendations on GSP breeders in the South East. I live in South Florida and havent had too much luck finding reputable GSP breeders close by. I would prefer to be within a reasonable distance so that I can meet with them personally but would also consider having a pup shipped as an option, since I realize there are not many breeders in the state.

Ive been browsing multiple breeders online and through the classifieds here, but havent come across any litters that have caught my eye. Im looking for a pup to be primarily a waterfowl dog and be a companion. Not interested in doing any field trials or testing, just hunting.

Time and money are not a concern. Im willing to wait until next year or the future if it means finding the right breeding/pup.

Thanks for your time! Its greatly appreciated!

Kelsey

Ya, walnut hills. My newest is out of sam man. Both have fritz as grandsire. This last one has a really nice temperament quick to learn, calm in the house. Talk to them about what you want. Then be patient and wait. If it takes 6 months or a year you won't be sorry. This is no time to just go jumping into something because it's quick and easy

You have a great looking pup Greg!

I will def be in contact with Walnut Hills as that seems to be the consensus so far as my best bet.

Thank you guys for the help, and if anyone else has more suggestions I'm all ears!

There are several good gsp breeders in the southeast.

Walnut Hill is one. They're in Georgia. Rick and Brenda are wonderful. Hopefully, they'll get the Fritz/Jolene bred this winter and I'll get one.

Palm Glades is another that makes good dogs down there. I believe that they've moved from Georgia to Florida recently.

You have Ray Dohse who is turning out some good dog under his Eshod label. He is in Georgia.

Finally, but not least or even last since there are plenty of other guys as well, you can also get a pup from Scott over at HiTailyn. Although he is outside of Dallas, he's partners in crime with Ray and probably wouldn't have any logistical issues getting a dog over to Georgia.

If you're open to air travel, I'd look at bdk, hk, uodibar, prairie wind, etc as well.

Never been easier to land a high quality gsp (or English setter for that matter) than right now.

consensus? Not among shorthair people. You have FT, hunt test nstra, navhda, just hunters, and the DK people. All think that their type of gsp are the best. You might consider one of the retriever breeds. I love my shorthairs. Have had them for 40 years. However if I was hunting only waterfowl I would have a retriever. "I think"
That gives you the option of doing some up north cold water cold weather hunting. I have limits to what I would ask a shorthair to do. They can handle cold wet if they are running. Not so much sitting in a blind. The retrievers are specialist at it
