bones for a puppy
I know rawhide is bad but what about pig ears or bones? Our GSP puppy is chewing everything in sight

You will probably get lots of responses to this question. But, in general, feeding any kind of bones to a dog is not recommended. There is far more harm that can come from feeding bones than any benefit. I would think rawhide would be a better alternative.

As for a puppy, I would never give them a bone, as already said, more bad than good! I also stay away from the traditional Nylabones, but the ones they make that are white, with a rubber toy built into them are good, you can check these by putting your thumb nail on the Nylon, and if it is somewhat soft, they are ok. I use rubber chew toys...!
I never give any of my adult dogs, bones (unless raw), antlers of any kind, nylabones (except the soft ones mentioned above)! I used to give all these to my dogs, but 2 of the tree broke teeth on these and I had to have them extracted.

Bully sticks work well for my V. If you can mind the bad breath!
Re: bones for a puppy
Antlers -from a store ( sterilized and tough)- not cheap, but safe and effective ; those hard bones (Rollovers) you can buy in a pet store ( very hard and stuffed). I don't like pig ears as they come from other countries and salmonella can be a problem.
Don't be alarmed if you see a tooth or three on the carpet during teething time.

rawhide will plug a dog up
Re: bones for a puppy
Not advocating it but our dogs have had a rawhide bone practically every evening for years.reba wrote:rawhide will plug a dog up

We gave our dogs rawhide for years until we had one die from a chunk of it causing blockage
Re: bones for a puppy
I used to give bones to my dogs, until 2 of them got slab fractured molars on the same day, and I got a $1200 vet bill from having the teeth removed.
Also used to let the dogs chew rawhides, until one night my husband woke up to a dog gagging, and found him in distress with a slimy rawhide stuck in his airway. Dang thing was so slippery, and so far down, we were lucky to have been able to grab on and pull it out.
Then we tried the dental chews made by Diamond and sold at Costco or Amazon. A different dog semi-inhaled one of those.
For our latest pup, a chewer, I bought nylabone toys, the larger size with three 'legs'. So far, so good. I don't like the smaller bone-shaped nylabones, because the ends get chewed off leaving a sharp end that looks like it could mess up the dog's innards pretty good if it was swallowed.

I feed raw chicken necks to pups over 12 weeks of age occasionally. I want them to know how to take care of such things at a young age. Otherwise, when they're older they might gulp one rather than chew it. I feed them to all my dogs occasionally to help with teeth cleaning.

Anything sold in a store avoid !
Everything in the backyard is natural. ...Depends on your backyard . There is no commercial packaged compromise though.
......
Cooked bones are not natural, Raw is.
Treated 'rawhide' , bleached is not natural.
If you want a 'puppy' to chew ?..give it 'Fat' ....strips of it like raw green Tripe straight from the belly!
It isn't hard it's soft ..takes a whole load of chewing though !..Pup is tired ....and tired of chewing .

Buy soup bones, they're fantastic. They market them as something different in pet stores but I can't think of the name.... but they are the same as soup bones you buy in the grocery store for $2. The pet store the same thing will cost you $15.
