15 month old Brit got into seeds. Help!

Post by jetjockey » Tue Oct 27, 2015 11:33 am

I was running my pup here in GA this weekend when she came over the hill sneezing and shaking her head. My assumption proved correct yesterday when the vet removed several seeds and seed "tails" from her sinuses. The seeds were buried pretty far in and required a specialists, with a special scope, and required her to be put under. I got her home last evening and the sneezing is gone, but she is still shaking her head occasionally like something is still bothering her. The vet said she believes she got all of the seeds out of her, and they flushed her sinuses as well, but the scope couldn't get to every nook and cranny. I'm hoping the continued head shaking is in response to the irritation caused by the procedure, but I'm paranoid about seeds in my dogs because I know how dangerous they can be. Does anyone recognize what types of seeds these are, and if they could be dangerous? Mind you this occurred in central Georgia south of Atlanta.

Check the ears again, especially deep inside. Maybe give your vet a call and ask about what to look for if an awn was left in the dog's sinus.
IDK what kind of seed that is, bit it looks freakin' nasty. Can your county extension office ID them for you?

Google meanseeds.com and follow the recommendations there. I printed the information for my local vet who had not seen anything about this topic, and her comment was "I have never diagnosed this before, but that does not mean I have not seen it. I just didn't know enough about it to know what I was looking at." I believe that quick treatment saved my dog. Also search 'big lump on her side' thread on this forum. Be tenacious and stick up for your dog. Good luck with your pup, and let us know how it all plays out.

Thanks for the response guys. I've been away from home since Tuesday, so I haven't been able to observe my pups reactions. The good news from my wife is that my pup seems to have returned to normal with no sneezing or head shaking. I've researched seeds in my area that could be dangerous, and haven't been able to find any, especially this time of year. I'm crossing my fingers we are out of the woods, but time will tell.
