Alpha Setting I Wasn't Aware Of

Post by NEhomer » Fri Jan 22, 2016 6:35 pm

I've been very pleased with the Alpha and had it on my dog the other evening on our property as it was getting dark. He went off onto the frozen swamp and pointed. An orange belton setter goes invisible in a woods mottled with snow so I turned on his collar light and saw that he was just a little ways ahead. It was dark and I had thin gloves on. When I tried to turn off the light, I realized that the unit wasn't working. I had no communication or gps. Tried shutting it off and re-starting. Nothing.

Of course, unknown to me, I had inadvertently turned off tracking (the button above collar adjust) and it took a run through Garmin support for me to discover my error.

So I'm left wondering why one would wish to turn off tracking in the first place. The only reason I can only come up with is saving battery life but it goes for twenty hours on a charge. It that it though or is there something I'm not thinking of?

Why would you turn off tracking?

If you just wanted to use the ecollar function in a training situation.

If you just wanted to use the handheld as a GPS unit and you don't have a dog out.

If you are downloading GPS data points to a computer.

Those are just a few that I can think of off the top of my head.

I have several of my hunting buddies dogs in my unit. When I am not hunting with them I do not want their dogs showing up on the screen.

Go to dog list
- select the dog you want to turn back on
- select - Show Info
- select the menu which is the stack of 3 lines
- hit - start tracking

your set to go.

its the same method to stop tracking
