cactus questions?
cactus questions?
Hard running bird dogs first time around cactus. Is there anything I can do to prepare them for what's probably going to be a mess of thorns. Any advise is must appreciated. Thanks

Boots and Vest!

I don't know where you are from or where you are going to hunt.
There are many different types of cactus you may run across. Some of which my GSP's can run full bore and never have a problem; which I find amazing. Some of it is just down right terrible; such as the low growing long spined stuff. In this stuff I do not run my dogs.
I always carry hemostats clipped to my vest. For the long spined jumping stuff I also carry a metal tooth comb for knocking it off.
A lot of times cactus equals rattlesnakes. I like to hunt in weather between 30 and 50 degrees.

Good Luck! hope they learn quickly, and minimize heavy first exposure.

Ugh! I hope they don't come out looking like that. We are headed to Texas so Im not sure how it can be avoided. Thanks for all the help.

Look at the dog in the picture, then look at the ground. If you see this stuff, get out!

What kind of cactus are you expecting to be around? If there is teddy bear cholla I'd recommend not hunting your dog there. Take a fine tooth comb to knock off any cholla balls. You don't want to fight them.

Not sure what kinda of cactus going to be a couple hrs north of Austin. Guess I'm just going to get some boots and try to keep them close and slow which will be a mission in itself.
