Learning lesson, raising birds

Post by oldbeek » Fri May 20, 2016 3:14 pm

I had lots of mice eating my bird feed at night. I started putting the food away at night and put out several tin cats. I caught over 40 mice in a few days. Then I noticed my Chuckars were not laying as many eggs. Then 4 nearly ready to hatch pigeon eggs disappeared. I knew there was a bull snake lurking around and probably eating mice. I think Mr Bull snake has changed his diet from mice to eggs. Live and learn.

Living in East Tx, if my pigeon coop wasn't snake proof, I would have a snake coop. Plus I live on a lake. neighbors and i have killed 7 snakes this spring so far, and I almost stepped on one last night.

We've got a rat running around. I told my JRT that if he doesn't do his job , he doesn't eat.

Make your coops cat proof and get a Maine Coon. You won't have any mice or rats and fewer snakes. Of course you'll have fewer wild birds as well. In fact you might have no critters at all for a half mile radius after a year or so............
