It's Always Something.
It's Always Something.
Had my dogs out in the woods/fields today - about 650 acres. We startled a doe that was sleeping and it attacked my dog. No it didn't run from the dog ; it attacked Lady and stayed. ( The dog didn't chase the deer; it is trash broke on deer. )
I hesitated to get down there as I knew the deer could attack me.
The deer hung around, but I rescued my dog who is now in surgery - several deep puncture wounds, broken ribs, leaking air from the lung etc.
Even as we headed back to the car the deer hung around . Just my luck to come upon a brain damaged deer. There was no fawn in site , but she must have had a fawn hiding. Only explanation.

Thank you friends.

Oh man, that's terrible.
Too bad you didn't have a firearm. Revenge could have truly tasted good.

More setter mojo your way Sharon

Had a buck attack Lani in SD last year but didn't hurt her. Did she have a fawn there Sharon? Hope she makes a speedy recovery. Glad she didn't come after you; an ol' broad like you wouldn't have stood a chance od eluding her!
Re: It's Always Something.
Never would have thought of something like that happening. Prayers for your dog.

Guys, be careful this time of year, those does can be vicious. A dog was killed a few years back up at Highland in Michigan.
One of my dogs faced off with a doe last year in the alfalfa field, fortunately I was right there and called him off before she got too riled up, and I think the only thing that saved the dog from an attack was that she couldn't decide to go after the dog or me and the four-wheeler.
We have lots of deer here, and after that experience I now run the milk route on my training grounds myself before running the dogs. Using a bell on a dog also can help alert the deer so they will leave. Even so, many times I've found bedded fawns and scrambled to get the dogs the heck out of the area.

She's home and should have a good recovery. I assume there was a fawn(s) nearby.
Appreciate all the kind comments.

Bucks play no role in a fawns life after inception. Extremely unlikely that a fawn was any where in the vicinity of the buck that injured this dog. And even if one was nearby the buck would not have cared. Way more likely that the buck's survival instinct in the presence of a wolf-like creature triggered the attack.
In Spring in deer country make plenty of noise when running the dog, this helps with black bear as well. I frequently see deer and bear when I'm out with one dog. When I take all three of them I never see any game. Maybe they think it's a pack of Wolves or Coyotes? Could be because the Chessie barks and growls at everything that moves.
Glad to hear she's healing well...............

Re: It's Always Something.
I don't think a buck was involved. It sounds like a doe with a fawn nearby which is not so rare anymore as the deer become less frightened than they used to be when there was much less contact with people.Rik wrote:Bucks play no role in a fawns life after inception. Re: It's Always Something.
I've had a buck injure a dog, but nothing like that.
Might have to start towing along a leash of Scottish Deerhounds to set deer on the path to clearer thinking and teach them some respect for dogs. Gun works but not if there are people or houses around.

Re: It's Always Something.
She had her drainage tube removed today and stitches out in 2 weeks. She's rarin" to go ! Unbelievable. It will hard to keep her not running for 2 weeks.
Re: It's Always Something.
I'm really glad to hear Lady is doing so well, Sharon.
You'll have to post what happens at her next deer contact. Talk about aversion training

Great news.
...and fortunate that her recovery won't waste precious hunting time.

Now just lay still and don't drive your mom nuts!
