Are these bird hunting boards DEAD?

Post by Moonshine Ike » Wed Oct 05, 2016 7:04 am

Maybe forums are a thing of the the past. Maybe all that can be said has been said.

This board has really slowed down. Another board I lurk on occasion has put most of its efforts into off topic subjects and cares more about poems, thoughts and essays than bird hunting.

Maybe the dedicated bird dog people are out in the field doing it instead of posting about it. Who knows?

RIP bird dog forums?

I'd like to know where are the members who cried about not coming here any more because of political threads. Those threads were shut down and the complainers don't contribute much anyway.

I hope not; but I'm a bit surprised not to be seeing photos and stories of this season's hunts. Of course, it would help if I could get out more and report something. I've only been able to get out for 2 hours on opening day (over 3 weeks ago). Been trying to get the wood supply and yard in shape for the coming winter. Hoping to get out with the boys this Saturday

Facebook has a lot to do with it, I'm sure.

I agree that Facebook has a lot to do with it.

There are so many "groups" on there these day that you can follow. Its so easy for people to snap a picture or record a video and post it to these groups and have a discussion. Or get their pat on the back

Thoughts and essays are nice...poems, less so.

Sharing one's dog and time afield could be considered somewhat of a gift....personally, I continually find less and less to be recognizable afield and sharing common ground on important subjects affecting time spent afield even more so....on birddog message boards, on upland message boards or, in barbershops.
While I only recently joined Facebook due to a new Gordon pup, I do find that one can limit and direct gifts on FB rather than the willy-nilly scattering to all comers of past days a-Net and one does appear to find a bit less fanciful and must-do posts on FB re all things dogs, scatterguns and gamebirds.
I also suspect that "dedicated" birddog people has more than one definition.

So, which is the "thoughts and essays" birdhunting message board? :?:

Funny how that works isn't it?

I enjoy this forum however it is quite 'interesting' at times - I'll just leave it at that.

These boards cycle yearly. This is the time of year they go dead because everyone is hunting (just starting) and the training is kind of done. I think this board is still where the greatest training information is given. I think the big attraction to the face book boards is how easy it is to post pictures on them. Much easier than on any of these boards.

Yep. I still haven't posted a picture on here because doing so from an iPhone has too many unnecessary steps. And the mobile app is clumbersome.

Facebook and Instagram, there you'll find the pictures (and some really good ones too).

Exactly. I expect as usual that you'll see many more posts once winter comes - unless of course you have a hound and hunt rabbits.:)

Message boards are sliding because of fb for sure. I much prefer boards because the content is categorized. Wifey's fb is so full of minutia....baked some cookies today, took my cat to the vet, I wish it would stop raining, here's a picture of my lunch. Cripes.

Bird Dog forum
Couple of Music forums
Sports forum

It's much easier to see content that you intend to.

+1 I haven't posted much but log on a few times a day mostly on my brakes at work just to see if there are any new reply's. fb is to much media of what people are offended by this week next week will be a new thing to be offended by and forget about what they were all outraged about the week befor. I do log on FB just to see if any of my buddies posted any new hunting pic. if it wasn't for that I would get rid of FB so relay hope boards aren't a thing of the past.

I gave facebook a try a couple of years ago . I joined a sort of private gundog training group that was "invitation only." I didn't like the format, I didn't like the gossip and I didn't like the groups objectives which was to have everyone train using "positive only" methods. They took this ideology to ridiculous (to my mind) lengths and were doing complete newcomers to gundog training a big dis-service.

I had arguments galore with the other group members and eventually resigned just before I was chucked out ! I haven't been on F.B. since then. Where gundog training is concerned I saw too much of the blind leading the blind on there. Too many "experts" that I know "bleep" well have never achieved much , if anything, with their own dogs telling beginners how to train theirs ...........to achieve similar results ???

I've stuck to forums like this one ever since but I have seen two once very good and popular gundog forums here in Britain wither and die in the last few years. I think those forums were a bit too specialised in their content and so when some of their membership moved to F.B. the forums didn't have enough members left to keep them going ?

I used to be a member of 6 gundog forums but I am now down to 3.
