Dun Roven kennels
Anyone have a dun roven dog? Looking for general traits - biddability, nose, energy levels (suited as a house dog?), etc.

You can PM if you want. I'm just looking at different options. I haven't even settled on a setter yet. Just have my curiosity peaked.

Lol I can't decide whether to go lab or setter. As a hunter I prefer upland...however I have many more opportunities for waterfowl so tend to do it more. I know a lab makes more sense I just can't get excited about it. My heart is with ruffed grouse and woodcock but I suppose my cocker fits that bill

Robt., my intel is Cass has been in touch with your pal Naj the Euro gundog psychic, to find out if a bilingual barking Lagotto Romagnolo might not be the best compromise choice as his new hunting companion. As that breed expands his "turf" as above to include truffles for more upland opportunity...

I find it interesting that no Setter folks have chimed in....or cover dog Lab folks as well.
Re: Dun Roven kennels
I highly recommend Dun Roven Kennels. Rich and his wife do a great job! I currently have 2 pups from them. One is 7 months old and has about 35 solid woodcock points so far this spring. Points, backs, and reteives (the dummy) all naturally. The other one is 5 months old and is pointing Pigeons and retrieves the dummy naturally. Both pups were scent pointing pen raised quail at 14 weeks. If you want to send me your email I can forward you some pictures.

Michael, The guru 'naj' will have him ''clicking'' his heels with expert delight along with her with the ruby red shoes
The 'Bracco' may be a better option for them upland folk 'in foreign parts' .

I think you'd be hard pressed to catch me clicker training or owning a bracco
Re: Dun Roven kennels
cc on a setter is a different story
Re: Dun Roven kennels
You can't have it all on this one Nick.
Nothing better than a setter for upland bird work in ON ,and a joy in the house.
Nothing better than a lab for waterfowl/ late season ice skim.
Maybe you'll have to get two more dogs.
Have you thought of a versatile? Talk to some of the versatile owners on OOD.

No versatiles... my cocker is more than adequate for both upland and waterfowl so whether I choose an upland specialist or a waterfowl one is really the key. I have a harder time getting excited about a waterfowl specialist which is why I'm flirting with the idea of a setter. I just don't know where to start my search but dun roven looks like a valid starting point.

Dun Roven Kennel located in the heart of Michigan's grouse and woodcock range would be a great place to start your search. As you move forward you should be also locating training help that will be suitable for your new project. When you acquired your Cocker you spent time with a Retriever trainer, Your setter pup will have much different criteria in development than what you have been accustomed to. Best of fortunes in your search for a pup.

Re: Dun Roven kennels
Very good point Hal. Looks to be many more pointing dog folks near me than spaniels. As I said I'm not set on a specific breed yet just doing research. Who knows... maybe I'll end up with another spaniel by the end of this all lol.
