Kennel Runs?

Post by midwestfisherman » Thu Jan 18, 2007 2:42 pm

I am planning on building four to five kennel runs this spring. I was wondering what an appropriate size would be for the runs. These runs would not be attached to any building but free standing with a dog house in each run and shade netting over them. I can't pour concrete at this time so I am also looking for suggestions on appropriate flooring for the runs (i.e. crushed limestone, pea gravel, or possibly a synthetic wood type of material)?

If it makes any difference I own all setters.

Phase 2 of the project for later in the year or possibly next spring would be to install a roof over the kennels.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

I think that you will find that most "mobile" panels are 10x10x6. There fore you can make kennel runs that are 5'x20'. I have used this setup for some time and the dogs seem to have exercise room while in the kennel. I have used gravel, but I am in the process of putting down pavers. While the gravel will work and it does toughen pads, the problem is it is constant maint. to keep it clean and if you have active dogs in the kennel you will have to shovel your rock back in.

I have a 13x32 concrete pad with a 15x34 metal roof over it. I have either 3 10x10 or 6 5x10 runs. And my pointers do just fine in 5x10 runs. That is what i have.

I went to a local fencing co and had my runs made to order. One kennel is 5x12 and the other is 5x15. The last time I had it done I had the heavy gauge wire used, I like it much better. I make sure they put smooth ends at the bottom and top to keep from havng punctures.

Going the cheap route I have 8x8 pins one indoors and one out for each dog. They are all made out of cattle panels and 5ft tall woven wire fencing tied to the inside. The cattle panels are 16 ft long so thats how I come up with 8x8. Each kennel, inside and out, cost about $100.00. They may not be the sexiest but they sure work well! Just a thought it you are wanting to do it a bit cheaper!

We laid a 25 x 16 concrete slab and had a local fencing company make a 6 run kennel with the runs 4 x 12. When they built it I had them add axtra uprights on the rear so I can configure it several ways:

6 4 x 12
4 6 x 12
3 8 x 12
2 12 x 12.

There is a slide show of our kennels on our website: http://vomerntemond.com/aboutus.html
