Alpha 100 / Etc. - Distance Travelled

Post by tmensonides » Thu Nov 30, 2017 6:29 pm

Looking at info on my days out this year and curious how far ya'll pups travel in a day of hunting if you have the ability to track it...and how far it is compared to how far you travel....

So far I'm for a 6-7 hours out for me, I travel about 7-8 miles and the dog is doing ~23 miles...that's decently hilly Eastern Washington ground with quite a bit a heavy brush that we spend a decent amount of time working...quail and pheasant ground, haven't been out for chukar yet this year...

Current hunting dog is only 8 months and doing a lot of learning so curious how it shapes up over the years...older dog was a flusher and is retired and never had the tracking tech with her...

I'm in central WA. In the chukar hills between 4-5:1 down in the flat lands they roll pretty good and it's 7-10:1 often hitting 20-35 miles.

In September I was in Montana hunting grouse and huns. My 15 month old Brittany did 30 miles the first day and I think we were in the field about 5 hours. Today hunting pheasants here in South Dakota we were only in the field for about 1.5 to 1.75 hours and she did 10 miles. She has some big wheels and like to roll. Sometimes a little too big for pheasants!

IN GENERAL and breaking it down by the hour, most dog's do 7-8 miles in and hour, most hunters 1 1/2 to 2. From what I've seen. Taking a total day can be misleading because you spend a lot of time changing covers. Get in the grasslands where all the dog does is hunt and that skews it as well.

I got an Alpha this year and my pudelpointer does 10-15 miles a day. Seems to be about 4:1 for the dog vs myself. I think the furthest he's gone in a weekend is 27 miles.

Sounds like maybe I need to slow down a little and let him work!
