Got a new pup. Need some help

Post by maverick351 » Mon Feb 19, 2018 1:09 pm

So long story short got a pup that needs some work. We will be registering her with AKC and need help namewise. Our other dog (a lab) is named Beauw. Our Gsp we just got is named (not sure on spelling yet) Arrow or Erro. Pronounced the same. But looking for ideas on AKC names. Obviously archery related (I run an archery shop). Thanks for all the ideas and help.

Kacey Musgraves has a country song called follow your arrow. In the song it says follow your arrow wherever it points. Should hold true in the field.

I wouldn’t go with Erro - too close to Error and sometimes dogs live up ( or down) to their names
Besides if you have an archery theme in mind, why not make it straightforward so people don’t have to guess or miss the mark completely.

When I name my dogs ( weather related theme) I look online for a list of weather terms and definitions. I usually find some I hadn’t thought of, or didn’t even know about. maybe there is similar for archery?

good luck with the new pup. But remember, without pictures, it didn’t happen

You could incorporate some of the names of past archery personna, like Howard Hill, Fred Bear or Ben Pearson. You could incorporate some old bow names like Hoyt Pro Hunter or Bear Tamerlane. You could incorporate some old broadhead names like Super Hilbre, LaFond Lightning, Black Diamond or Razobak. or for some added punch Zwickey Judo(yes the pun was intended). You could reach back to wooden arrow days with Port Orford cedar or some of the old Easton aluminum arrow designations.

Yes I am an old fart and Yes I actually used pretty much all of the above at one time or another(except fort the Bear Tamerlane which was out of my price range). I still have most of a box of LaFond Lighting fours beating around someplace. Saw them about 5 years ago.

Enjoy your new hunting partner.

I do appreciate the help. After reading the response I do agree with Erro not being good. I just like to see since so many on here have been very creative with names for the AKC

It's not to late to change this dog's name. Or, you can keep Arrow.....
I'd name your dog something like, "______ Thunder Bolt". The blank line represents the kennel if you so wish, although you may need to get the breeder to sign off on that.
His call name could then be "Bolt", which has a nice clean crisp sound for the dog as well.

Dogs name was Bella but doesnt really know its name as PO didnt do much as far as training. Sent her to a trainer but never did any of the homework so to speak. We are changing the dogs name to Arrow. We believe we are gonna go with (Jeans Nockin an Arrow) call name Arrow

Some things my trainers taught me....

Pick a name that has a short version, e.g. Maddie = Dee, Sprint = Boo the short version is the call name used to train the dog. two syllable call names should be avoided...

Do not name a dog with a name that sounds like any of your commands, e.g. Fearless/ Here, Bold/ Hold, etc.

All good guidelines I think....
