What age do GSP's stop growing

Post by PSUHUNTER » Fri Feb 23, 2018 11:59 am

What is the general rule of thumb for a Shorthair to completely fill out? I understand every dog will be slightly different. For ex my pup is 16 months old and Weighs between 66-68 pounds and has held that weight the last couple months. I am assuming he is done?

Yes, growing is linked to weight. That's why my 15 week old pups weigh about two lbs more every week;-)

Wow!! 67 lbs?!? Can you supply a pic? How much does he consume per day? What is the pedigree behind this dog?
I REALLY hope he doesn't grow (gain weight) any more!

You can view his pedigree on marianikennels.com . Sire is Reif Vom Trochen Bach and dam is Kimber Vom Riverwoods. Both parents weigh more than he does now and are extremely fit. I would say he eats a little less than double what is recommended for his weight. He could use a pound or 2 currently by the way his ribs feel.

He may widen and chest drop a little more and gain a little more as he does that.
He isn't skinny. I can't see any ribs in that picture. With a shorthair it's alright to see a little rib.

Thanks for the info. The picture is a bit deceiving, I've been told he is at a good weight but his ribs can be very visible at times. A bit off topic but I am impressed with how strong shorthairs are. At 6 months and around 18#'s less he would retrieve this tire up a 1acre hill until I made him stop.

I like his build! Nice looking dog. Big...but nice!
Cover trial setters went through a phase where-by the more diminutive dogs "looked" more snappy by virtue of their gait which drew a judges attention. Their size made them agile and very snappy maneuvering the dense grouse cover. Subsequently, there has been a conscious effort to bring certain setters back to their normal size while not trading off that light-pawed, animated, eye-candy gait.
Sometimes, a larger dog can appear to have a more lumbering gait.

I didn't realize he was large for a shorthair. His sire is a DK dog currently at 82# with the same build but muscles on muscles.

As mentioned earlier height will max out at a year to year and a half. Muscular growth will max out at two to three years, this can be toned through exercise at any age. Mentally you'll see maturity by age 3, the puppy phase will fade away.

Beautiful pup. Don't worry, he is not large for a DK. Both parents are from great DK kennels. If you were looking for a pocket rocket and wanted to do field trials, he will not be that. If you wanted a great foot hunting dog you have the perfect pup. The breed standard doesen't even mention weight, from http://www.nadkc.org/pdf/graybook-v2-7.14.10.pdf:

"Size
Withers Males: 62 to 66 cm
Bitches: 58 to 63 cm"

The Training doesn't determine the size either

He is not a lab or a chessie, so don't compare him to one. Especially the ones in the show ring. Ignore opinions on his weight from the peanut gallery, or really anyone other than your breeder or vet.

He looks really healthy to me in the tire picture.

A vet told me with GSP's and similar dogs that you don't want to see the definition in their hip bones. A little rib is a-ok.
