GSP with a thick coat?

Post by weimdogman » Sat May 18, 2019 9:01 am

So I recently saw a litter of black and white gsp that had a thick coat. Not long haired but a coat more like labs. Guy said he had dna test and it came back gsp.
I know in Weims their is a recessive gene that produces long hairs and a recessive gene that produces a thick coat.
Anybody know of gsp with a thick coat? Seems ironic not to have "short" hairs on a gsp.?

I've seen a bunch of GSP's at NAVHDA and had them as fosters as well.

I'll tell you that their coats vary. They all look the same from 10 feet away but some are shorter and softer, and some are thicker. I've had one that was more "lab-like" in that his coat, while short, was THICK and coarse-ish. I've had others that were fine coated.

GSP coats can be a bit variable. My daughter has one with a slightly longer coat of very stiff and thick hair. He is very much a water lover and always has been. He went in for a swim of his own accord at just 3 months old.
I wonder if the coat has anything to do with that ?

I am Bald ,but my Brother still has a head of hair ,we both have the same Father and Mother . We are both about 60 years old. I had a Full head of hair when I was younger . Perhaps it was the 'Beret' that my brother never wore . :D

I have never seen a GSP like that! That is really odd.

I wonder how that changes as the pups age into adulthood.

It is not just the coat that is different, the general build of the dog is too.

Agree, I think they look meatier...ALTHOUGH, I have a GWP that people comment how thick he is til he gets wet...Its a lot of fur...My Brother has a Great Pyreneese...The one time he went swimming he came out looking like an ad for the ASPCA.

With that coat I'd want Paternity tests...because to me it looks like the neighbor's husky hopped the fence one night.

I will find out the stud. I know the bitch and her linage.
Stud is in N.Dak. and I believe is a import.

Methinks the stud is the mailman. I'd look real hard at neighbor dogs.

Reminds me of a woman in town that had what was very obviously a goldendoodle. She swore up and down that it was a Golden Retriever, "I have AKC papers" she insisted, her littermates look like normal GR's, She's just curly!" But her neighbor had an intact standard poodle. I fully believe that the breeder bred her dog to the stud listed on the pedigree...And I also fully believe that Howlin Wolf came around the back door.

Like Jonov I'd be inclined to think a "husky breed" got in there somehow.
I like the look of the dogs though. Looks like they could withstand our Scottish weather a bit better than most GSP's !

This winter, just prior to the afternoon opening of a Flyfishing & Wingshooting show. An exhibitor walks in with a wirehair that had the exact markings as my dog. He looked at my dog, saw me reaching for my camera, turned around, and left that dog in his truck the entire weekend

I believe you can DNA and confirm the sire and dam from the DNAed samples but I do not believe you can define the breed.

It can be whatever they say. One thing it wouldn't be is mine.
