Mut Identification

Post by strick9995 » Tue Jul 02, 2019 12:45 pm

I got this pup (Hazel) from a rescue shelter a year ago and I wanted to see what all you experts thought on what breeds she is mixed with. I wont tell you what the shelter told me (yet). She is 1.5 years old and weighs 65 pounds. I have my guesses, but the one thing that throws me off is her curled tail. What do you think?

The first picture is her at 5 Months, and the last two are her at 1.5 years.

We had an Aussie/Lab mix that looked similar.

You won't get any definitive answers here based on the pictures. It'll all be guesses. They do make DNA kits you could use to get a more exact answer.

Lab X GSP?

I've see some undocked tails on GSPs and weims. They all curled like that and were by and large pretty whippy.

Those dog DNA tests seem pretty bogus...so many results come back as crosses between odd/rare breeds it makes me wonder. Seems to me I read that the tests don't go on parentage ( they can't unless they have parental DNA on file) but they use markers for various characteristics like color, ear set, etc, then assign breed based on those traits.

My cousin has an Aussie/Lab mix and the color markings are very similar but their head and body shape is different.

I'm skeptical of the canine DNA tests as well. My brother picked up a pound dog and was curious as to it's heritage, so he paid for a test. It came back showing the 80 pound, thick-coated dog as being 1/4 Mexican Hairless. I struggle with that, as I'm not sure there is a Mexican Hairless within 500 miles of Rapid City, and the dog certainly shows no characteristics of the breed. Proceed with caution.

Based on appearance, the dog could be a GSP / Lab cross.....

Coats too short for a GSP/Lab from what I've seen.

I'd say Lab/Aussie or Golden/GSP.

pit bull cross!

ok,,,just kidding,,based on experiences with some shelters that's likely what they said,,,

my youngest volunteered for 5 years at a shelter in Florida during grad school,,,,helped her relax from doctoral pursuit,,,

we always got laughs out of the dogs that the shelter labeled as "pit bull cross",,,,solely based on a characteristic or two,,,,

if it had any blockiness to the head
any brindle coloration at all
stoutness,,

all (and more) were reasons to label a dog with that,,,

may have had something to do with local,,,

anyhow - back on topic - looks like a happy dog to me,,,parentage be danged

Funny...The ones I always see are listed as "Lab Mixes" if they have anything resembling a lab at all...even when they're obviously Pit crosses...

Well that answers that question. I was told that she is a GSP/Lab mix at the shelter. I see the GSP in her behavior and build, but couldn't figure out the tail.

She hunts so that's all that really matters.
