Our Brookings County PF group held our annual youth hunt last weekend. 21 graduates of the S.Dak. SafeHunt classes were invited with their parents/guardians.
We meet at our local gunclub for a safety review followed by some trap and a pheasant silloute to pattern their guns on. After about a hour of this, one of members, does a preview -safety talk about hunting with dogs. Rod has his dog point trapped pigeons and doesnt shoot the first 2 as there was a safety issue. Another dog backs this 3rd bird which Rod shoots and has his VDD retrieve to hand. The kids always love this exhibition.
From there we have a bus take the kids to the 3 fields where planted birds get their attention. We divide into 3 groups as its way safer. I had asked friends and members of our local navhda group to guide/handle dogs. We had 8 navhda people and 1 nstra dog handler combo!
A great safe hunt was had by all. We finish back at the gunclub with door prizes-2 youth model pumps-a $100 gift certificate and some other clothing items. We show the kids how to clean the birds and send them home with them.
