Droppers?

Post by big steve46 » Mon Feb 12, 2007 10:51 am

A friend of mine has a Dropper which is a cross between an E. Pointer and a Brittany, even though I know most are crosses between a pointer and a Setter. His Dropper is a good hunter. Aren't GSPs sorta like Droppers with their tails chopped off??

And a hush falls over the crowd........

I have never heard the term applied to the cross as described. As far as I'm concerned a dropper is a pointer/setter cross, and at one time were recognized as a registerable dog in the 1st generation by AF.

Can't wait for Wagonmaster's response.

It has always been my understanding that a dropper is only a pointer x setter cross, as the name described pointer-looking dogs that "dropped" on point. This was explained as a throwback to the setter instinct to "set", or drop on point.

A Dropper no doubt traditionally has always been a Setter-Pointer cross but here in illinois, we have always, as far as I know, called any bird dog cross a Dropper.

I have a 3 year old GSP/EP cross that I adopted from a bad situation when she was 9 months old.
I just call her one heck of a bird dog.
I've only heard of the setter/EP crosses referred to as droppers.

I had always thought a "dropper" was basically any dog that was the result of a mating of a pure bred bird dog and something other than a pure bred dog from that same breed. A pointer crossed with the neighbors mutt would result in "droppers" for example. Just what I understood "dropper" to mean.

Most, if not all, breeds are the result of cross breeding if you go back far enough. To this day I have no problem with people cross breeding, as long as they are HONEST about it. It will be interesting to see what advances in DNA will show. I'm not sure how accurately that technology can show when and from what breeds, crosses came in to modern dogs.

So do I have to change my profile now and call myself a dropper owner? Well, at least it is a half step better than a setter, I can console myself with that. :D

Steve,

I think the Brit/Pointer cross is a dripper!

Setter owners are sometimes called dippers too but it is a temporary condition and can be overcome by just getting a dog with a short tail.

For those of you who took this post seriously I think also the dropper is pointer/setter only for the reasons stated above. Other crosses are just that, crosses.

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Ezzy, I'm sure that technically you are correct but here in S. Illinois we've always called any cross between a pointer and any other breed of bird dog a Dropper. Of course, we are more laid back and easier to get along with than some in N. Illinois!

Steve,

That doesn't surprise me at all. I hear down there they call setters birdogs too.

Up here in Northern IL we have to be on our toes all the time as we still have to work for a living and can't just spend time on a gundog forum trying to learn how to read. 8)

I understood ya. That was the best smarta$$ remark I could come up with on short notice.

Am going to check out of here for a few days and go to one of our Regional Championships, down in TX where it is warm, so you are safe for a little while. 8)

Guys
I've had many bird dogs in my 39 years of hunthing.
3 were droppers all english pointer/Llewellyn
Came to me from other hunters all of no relation
These three without question were the best of the bunch.
Somthing about mutts. They make great compainions and take less trips to the vet for silly medical issues.
I don't avocate cross breading on purpose
When I'm ready for my next bird dog I'll be looking for someones mistake.
