Pigeon sickness?

Post by V-John » Tue May 08, 2007 4:14 pm

Hey guys, I was just wondering if you could help me out here. I have a little coop, and I had five pigeons a while ago. I say HAD because one of them died. I had noticed that he was puffed up all the time, and shivering, but didn't think too much of it. Well, I went out to the coop and found him stone dead on the bottom of the coop. I have now noticed that there is another bird showing the same symptoms. Without spending a bunch of money, is there anything that I can do to alleviate this? I've heard about putting a drop of bleach or whatever in their water. Will this help? Thanks guys,
Any other ideas?
John

Send a of week or two worth of medications thru them. Good Antibiotics/General Medications would be either Terramycin/Auremycin and Corid is a good medication for Cocci. All of these can be found at your local farm or ranch store and are cheap. A word of warning I would not introduce any new birds until you complete at least 1 week of general meds or you will likley infect them as well.

I bought a bunch of rollers to kill and threw them in with my homers. I ended up losing 2 of my best homers. They brought something in with them. I treated them with Terramycin and it worked. No others died.
Also I was told that when you put your birds on an antibiotic that you need to take away all the grit until the medication is finished.

Another thing about antibiotics is they kill both the good and bad bugs so giving pro biotics is a good idea after completion.

You may want to add Apple Cider Vinegar to the water - about 2tbs to a gallon. This makes the water acidic, and discourages yeast buildup in the crop.

Bleach does the same thing but takes out too many of the good bacteria in the GI tract.

You need to spend the money and get a all in one med. It maybe a few different things ( it is probably coccidiosis) but this is the best if you have no idea what you are treating. It will cost you 50 dollars but will treat 30 gallons of water. The thing is you have to treat the water for 5 days so if the birds only drink one gallon in 5 days it will last you forever. This stuff will treat Coccidiosis, canker, worms, respiratory infections, and has probiotics in it to help replenish the good stuff the bird needs. Here is a link to the product foys sells. I use this stuff every 6 months to a year.
