Hi Griff Man,
We owned a pair of griffons back in the early seventies, wonderful temperments and good noses. The only problem we had was that they were way too versatile. Cats coons skunks bunnies and jackrabbits were fair game for them along with birds. They were decent pheasant dogs but a bit slow on sharptails and chickens. They would hunt all day at their own pace but you could hunt them everyday. If I slow down any more I will probably be looking for some more.SDGORD

TAK,
I won't comment on the clipper suggestion, I don't offend you Shorthair people, cuz SOME of you are nice folks.
sdgord,
You got it right, there was a lot of fur drive in the early Griffons. Alot of that is going away, or atleast no worse than anyother Versitile breed. I'm not sure if that is good or bad.
I have a Griffon from the new school. The old style of Griffs were plodders, they kept a steady pace and went all day. Most of the new style are more aggressive in the field and cover more ground quicker.
I hunted this weekend with a guy that had a nice little Britt., that dog went big. My Griffs worked the underneath cover and had the only 3 grouse points of the day.
Moral of the story, speed kills!

Kevin,
Sorry, I had to.
Really I love the hunting style of my Griffons, I know that the Griffons get a bad rap as a slow plodding dog. Some are still that way, but your seeing alot more bred for the longer legs, sleeker body, etc..
I see two theories about grouse hunting. One that big runners are better to get out cover ground and force the birds to sit tight. The other is that slower working dogs take time and cover the best cover spots and don't force the birds up with pressure.
I'm trying the second option now maybe the other option I'll try some day.
I, as you, I hunt in the thickest stuff. If you show me yours, I'll show you mine.

If there any griff owners they would understand where I come from. You need to be this way when you own a Griffon.

I want to see your coverts for grouse......he he he !!!
I think I need a day off to hunt I'm going goofy.

I will be tonight. I am leaving in about an hour to pick up my WPG pup. His name will be Cash. I did a lot of research before settling on a breed. I feel the WPG is the breed for me and my family. I am very excited. I also like the fact that they haven't been widely discovered in the U.S. yet. Popularity has hurt many breeds. I'll post some pics tomorrow.GRIFF MAN wrote:Are there any WPG owners out there..........................................................................................................................................................................
I got him from Bear Hug griffons. Their site is www.bearhuggriffons.comGRIFF MAN wrote:Welcome to the family.... I love puppies !!!
I bet you are excited, good luck and love that little guy it pays off.
Where did you get your pup from?? Who are the parents??
I'm going to have a breeding with Spike and my Belle this spring so I'll be knee high in puppies.

The sire was Ch Wet Acres Moonshine JH and the Dam was CH Wet Acres Happy Camper JH Their pedigrees can be seen on the site. Wet Acres Moonshine aka "Rugby" isn't listed on the pedigree they show as a Ch or JH. He got them since they posted the pedigree on the site. His dad scored a 112 prize 1 on NAVHDA natural ability.
It was a three hour drive to get him. He was pretty well behaved on the trip back. I was expecting an adventure. He had to inspect the house when he got here. I think he smelled everything from top to bottom.
I'll post pictures of him tomorrow. They have some pictures on the breeders site. He is male # 3 in the "B" litter. They were calling him "Ringer". We are going with "Cash" as a call name. His refistered name is Bear Hug Boy Named Sue.
New to this board but I have seen you on others.Yes there are griff owners out in syber space some of us just sit back and see what you all have to say about the great dog "Griffons" The Griff I have is the best dog I have ever trained. When ever we are out in the public people always ask what kind of dog is that?If I was a young man again he would have made a great chick magnet besides being a great bird dog.Have you been training this summer with all this heat?
Did I see this photo here?
I was just wondering if I saw this pic in the uglydoghuting.com photo contest?
Thanks
Chris
