Planting a Pheasant?

Not wanting to side track the thread on hunt tests with phez, I wanted to ask how to properly plant a pheasant either for a hunt test or training purposes? I've worked with just about every training bird except phez.

I've seen it done one way successfully.

It is very hard to duplicate if you haven't had experience doing it.

The guy grabbed the bird around the wings (when tucked into the body). He swings the bird like a pendulum under his spread legs. Does this several times. Then takes the legs with one hand while tucking the bird to his body and pulls out while squeezing the body. He then tucks the head under the wing and does not put the legs under the bird. He tucks the bird into a tighter spot and slwoly and quietly walks away. This takes practice. If you get the legs under the bird they will pop up and fly or run too quickly.

If they are pressured they will fly.

I am not comfortable planting a phez yet. Chukars yes, Phez - no.

I tuck the head tight under the wing. Lay the bird on the ground "over to the side that the head is under the wing". Then pump the legs while holding the bird down. It will go fast to sleep when pumping the legs. Then walk away leaving the legs in the pulled out position.

Bird farms put them in a gunny sack and swing them in a circle about 10 times and then dump them in a bush.

That is an easier way to do it (OhioGSP). You have to be sure to get those legs out from under them.

I have planted many pheasants on the game farm using the method OhioGSP described. The birds go right to sleep.

OHIOGSP...Describe exactly how you pump the legs. Tucking head and laying it on that side I get, but don't get the leg pumping?

I do the same as OhioGSP but I do not pump the legs. I just hold the legs out straight until, when I stop pulling, they do not retract.

You just pump the legs up to the body and pull them out straight. I do this a couple times and then hold out straight. I think it puts them to sleep better. Usually by the second pump they are sawing logs so hard they are rocking back and forth.

Please no bombs but the way I've seen it done is by holding the bird under one arm the taking you thumb put it on the birds throat and pinch until the bird passes out then set it down. After a couple of minutes the bird will be ready to be worked by the dog. The problem with putting the bird to sleep is it will not act like a bird it will just lay there and not put off much sent. By choking them out the bird will come to and sit tight until you pressure him.

When the bird wakes up no matter how you put it to sleep it sits up or even stands and leaves. I don't think you can make a case for more scent one way or the other. Normally when we plant pheasants you take them to the field in a crate or sack on the 4 wheeler and with rubber gloves on you put the head under the wing and sway them a little and throw them into the cover being careful to not get off or leave your scent. Works well if you have good cover but if its light you may have to dizzy them a little more and drop them in gently.

I believe there was a article in "Gun Dog" magazine a few issues back on this exact subject. Well maybe more than a few..say 7 or 8 issues ?

The way I've planted pheasant in the past is to put them down and then watch them fly away.
