Llewellin Lines

Post by eastwash » Thu Nov 08, 2007 12:21 am

I want to get a Llewellin setter pup and was wondering if anyone could give me information on what lines to look for when evaluating the pedigree. Also does anyone know of responsible breeders in Washington state or Eastern Oregon. The dog will be for hunting companion, not bred and no trials.

There are several Llew sites that will tell you history and bloodlines back to the beginning, google Llewellinsetters and you should find them.

I have a friend that has several dogs from Highway Dan lines and they do very well in NSTRA and Tournament style events as well as on wild quail and pheasants. Long way away from you but may find that in circles out that way too.

The Ryman and Old Hemlock are two very simulair lines of good old fashioned hunting dogs. I'm sure there must be others.

You see Bondhu, Windem or Cloncurragh etc. in a lot of pedigrees, some are English lines some American I was just wondering what that translates into as far as attributes of that line. Just curious.

I have a buddy with a Llew who shows alot of Bondhu in his pedigree. He's one of the most natural, instinctive dogs I've ever seen. This dog is a great bird dog for the foot hunter. He's super high energy, but uses it to flat out hunt, not run and play. He backs naturally and is just "bleep" impressive for no formal training. All this guy has ever done is put him down and hunt birds. He's a great house dog too. All in all I'm quite impressed with him....for a setter....JOKING!!!!

There are exceptions to everything but generally speaking the American lines have a little more horse power than the Bondhus. The American lines lean more in the direction of their cousins, the field bred English Setter and the Bondhu's are somewhat more like the Rymans and Hemlocks. I prefer the American dogs (Royacelle, Blizzard, Bomber, Gladstone) but do occasionally cross an American dog with a Bondhu if the Bondhu has the traits I like.

Ernie Hardman has a nice web site dedicated to the Llewellin. The site includes all known breeders of FDSB registered Llewellins.

I have a Llewellin out of Highway Dan. The dog is a hunting machine on wild birds, but what a nightmare to train. He has more quirks than any dog I have ever seen. I wouldn't trade him for the world though...he has the best disposition of any dog we have ever owned and will hunt hard until he drops. Medium to big running dog, but will check in on occasion to make sure he is still hunting for you.

Charles,

I spoke with a guy that knows you in a PM here, he's gone now. He spoke very highly of you and the information on you was not requested by me. Beats the heck out of some guy giving me a list of his favorite people. As I recall he said something similar to " if Charles says it, you can take it to the bank". You've made good friends for a reason I believe.

Dashing is usually associated with the Bondhu/Windem line.

Having been from Washington - good llewellins are hard to find up there - and since I left to move to TX - it got harder :D

You will just about have to have a puppy shipped in - kennels I would consider are Gary Wente's, Whiterock Kennels, Straight Creek, High Cotton, Wingswept, Gaines Kennels, Houdini's (under new owners) and Shoeleather - These are in no particular order of preference - just kennels that I have seen some good/great ones from.
