how much room for pigeons

Post by luke0927 » Sun Nov 11, 2007 7:08 am

I have a 4X4X6 Johnny house that i put qual in but they seem to have a hard time recaling back they are all just living in hte briar patch beside the house and a hawk got one yesterday at that. I do have a flight pen so im thinking of only putting quail in that and getting some piegons for hte more frequent bird training. I would like to put pigeons in my Johnny house would that be enought room for 6-8 or do they need a lot of room? would they be able to keep their wing strength in there? how would i rig up the return trap for them?

It would be enough room. The wings would stay strong when they are out flying. Most people use a bob trap. Like this. Scrol down and look at the one that says Heavy Duty Traps.

6 would be about right. The formula I use is 4x4x6 = 96/15 = 6.4 birds. :D

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Make the landing board on hinges and fold it up for the door. Close this every night. I would leave them in for 3 weeks. They have not flown before right? Here is a link to a thread about pigeons you might also get some info there. http://www.gundogforum.com/forum/viewto ... ght=pigeon

I don't have any pigeons yet i have to try and find some...i can get easier access to quail than pigeons but this time of year they are 3.50 a piece and they wont recall back to my johnny house i belive its because my funnel is a little off hte ground and i have a board for them to walk upto it....its this way becuase i build hte house on 4X4 skids.

what should i expect to pay for pigeons and i am looking for homing pigeons correct?

Yes, 5 dollars is a good price for nice birds. You need young birds that have not flown. If not you are taking your chances with losing them.
