pigeon food

Post by kalel » Thu Jan 10, 2008 2:59 pm

I read through the archives and found about how to feed pigeons, but no info on what to feed them. Is there a specific pigeon food? We have ducks and feed them chicken food. Can I use the same for my pigeons also (coming next tuesday).

I use various things. Some feed stores sell a specific pigeon food, which is pretty pricey. I take one of those pricey bags and cut it with a 1/4 to 3/4 mixutre with cracked or whole corn. Haven't lost one yet. Some times I throw in some grit for them too.

I have been feeding our pigeons hog chow for the past four years . I pay 8.50 for a 50lb bag . Some pigeon feeds can cost alot . We have quail in the coop that eat the same thing.

I pay 11.00 for a really good pigeon feed. You have to shop around sometimes. You should keep grit it the pen all the time. Most pigeon feeds will have corn, milo, peas (canadian or australian), wheat, barley, safflower. That kind of stuff. Right now I feed a high percentage of whole corn added to the feed but in the summer I would not do this. Once I ad the corn into my mix I bet I am right around 8-9 bucks a bag.

Pigeon Checkers and Corn

Post by jakegsp » Thu Jan 10, 2008 4:52 pm

I feed a mixture of Purina Pigeon Checkers and corn. I'm going to probably start doing mostly corn now though. Just picked up a bag of checkers the other day and it was $15.

I used to feed the commercial pellets (Pigeon Checkers) but switched to more grain type feeds along with medicated grit. The dropping from the pellets sets up like concrete and it was a nightmare to clean the coop.

You can also feed game bird feed or turkey starter. They really lay good on turkey starter' If you feed pellets there is no need for grit. The racing people feed grains rather than pellets.

Grit

Post by briguyz71 » Mon Jan 14, 2008 9:33 pm

Will quail need grit for cracked corn or scratch? Where would I find grit?
Thanks,
Bri

If you are flying them they will find their own grit. I would recommend grit with corn. Personally I feed nothing other than straight milo. Every 3rd month I start feeding crushed oyster for calcium and they reproduce fine on this schedule.
