Another Open Derby Placement

Post by Greg Jennings » Sun May 28, 2006 7:32 pm

All,

I'm going to brag on an OD placement to make this official, then I'm going to go onto what this is really about...a run w/ no placement.

Official Brag:
Last weekend Gunner placed 4th in the OD at the Twin Cities GWP Club trial at Crow-Hassan. Woo hoo.

Unofficial Brag:
This weekend, with *everything* going wrong (e.g., 95degrees, bracemate playing tag and barking at him the whole way) Gunner ran his heart out. He's made 100% improvement in his pattern. I'm stoked.

He's in the trailer now (we're in Eau Claire, WI), we're bringing him home for the first part of the Summer.

But, I'm now convinced that he has the potential to win a national trial (edit) in gundog stakes. So, he'll go back to Summer camp and start the Fall trial season. Sure, he'll suck for a while. But, come Spring, he'll be a threat to win OGD.

Thanks for letting me vent my happiness,

Thanks everyone.

Since he got his derby points at the end of last month, he's just running for experience anyway.

He won the OD at his first trial. In the second trail, he reverted to checking in, third trial, he got a fourth. This weekend, he ran extremely well.

Bottom line, he's making big moves and doesn't yo-yo at all anymore.

We're leaving for home tomorrow morning. He'll get a month and a half of being a house dog again, then it's back to preparing for the Fall trial season.

On a tangent, we met a lot of great people at the trial. I'm looking forward to coming back...even if it is a loooonnnggggg drive.

Best regards,

We're back safe and sound. ~ 11 hours driving time.

Gunner hasn't forgotten much. He grabbed one of the kids' socks and started running around the house playing keep away from them.

Greg

Sounds like Gunner had a good spring.

Hope you had a good time at the trial, glad you met up with some good people. I kinda like most of them too. Weather must have been brutal on dogs and people over 4 days though.

I think we're having the Fall Trial out there too, maybe I can catch you at that one.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the kind words.

This wasn't stellar from most people's perspective, but I got what I wanted. Greg got Gunner re-patterned forward. He'll do a "fly by" now out at 75-yards -100 yards. But, I can get a look from a judge now with that *and* I think it'll improve over time.

The folks up there were really nice. Joe Vicari, Bruce and his wife Sue, Larry Loftin, et al.

I liked the venue there. It's a skosh tight, but the rolling terrain makes for better visibility than, say, Indian Creek, down here. So, I expect that I'll be back either in the Fall or the Spring. Just promise me no 95 deg weather. Jeepers, he forecast for San Antonio, TX, Orlando, FL and ..... St. Paul, MN!.... were identical.

I only rode derby braces. I can say, with all humility, that my dog Gunner was *not* the class act of the day. Wes's dog Duke was the nicest that I saw. I'm a sucker for a dog that looks like a $1,000,000 on point.

I'll be talking to you,

Thanks! I think he'll work out. We'll just see where to go.

I'll put a note to Joe from you in the joke gift that I'm sending him. That'll wig him out even more.

Let's see where Gunner is when bird season starts. If I can swing by and get him and come train, er ah, I mean hunt, for a week I don't think Greg D would yell too much.

greg ,you are doing it right,by judgeing your dog on how it runs
regardless of the competition is the way to do it for the long run.
I am glad you are seeing improvement,it will build and then you will be in the blues.
As far as joe, just beat him, he never forgets that "present".
I am really starting to miss evil eva,but dan tells me she is doing well,he did send me some pics, she is standing like she did as a pup

The current contract comes up in August 2008. If we get another long-term contract or win the recompete of this one, I'll be here through at least 2012 when Cara graduates from high school.

After that, I'm going to try to get a "virtual" position and base myself in the Southern NE, KS, Western MO, Northern OK area and trial my little heart out.

Best,

i see Dixon in the background. looks like the back of Erickson slinking off to the left, and is that Vicari in the back right? can't tell. I know I should know the big galoot in the center, but don't know his name.

I told em, be nice this time, suck you in, then they can act normal the next time around.

Yep, Dixon in the background. That's the back of Art "The Intimidator" Armbrust on the left. The guy facing in the right edge is Mark Smith who was judging with Joe Vicari.

I don't know the big galoot in the center, but he's obviously disobeying Rick and Brenda's order to not wear the Walnut Hill GSPs shirt till after Gunner places....

Everyone followed the first part of their instructions well. I had a great time.

Best,

Looks like Dixon beyond the south side of your horse. Youve got one of the better handlers out there working your dog. He will let you know if your dog has what it takes to win.SDGORD
