My turn for a little brag

Post by WildRose » Thu Oct 11, 2007 8:12 pm

I normally dog get to attend many fall trials. Most years I leave here and head north for a couple of months hunting/training starting in September. I had planned to do the same again this year but being a newlywed and having the best little wife a guy could ask for I stayed home.

Word got out that I was home so I got invited to do some judging so I thought what the heck, might as well run a few dogs and make the trip worth while.

I never go to a trial planning to lose, but honestly since none of the trial dogs had, had a free run or been worked on a bird since May I wasn't exactly planning to tear the place up.

I entered seven dogs and placed with five of them! All but two of the seven are dogs that I bred, and all are dogs that I have raised and trained.

We entered 3 puppies, and took 1,3,4 in a pretty good stake. The winner is a dog I got from Heath Koomina in Iowa out of Ruger and his Angel bitch. This was only his second time to run free since May! He's a very natural front runner and a real hard charger and one I'm going to have fun with over time I'm sure.

My little young derby dog who had some nice runs as a puppy but never really ran hard or big really found his motor this weekend, and managed three nice finds and a back! He managed a third place in a very good derby stake.

Best of all was my project dog Abbey. Abbey was sold as a puppy and went to a "hunting home". The owner got in an ugly divorce and sat here for most of a year doing nothing while he figured out what to do. Last year we finally came to an agreement and I got her back to keep.

We knew she had some real potential as a trial dog so I started woring her towards that goal about 18 months ago.

She ran her first trial at the end of the spring season in 06 and really showed some great potential. She got her first placements at the Lone Star GSP trial last fall. This year though was her first real "trial season" doing a really nice job in both Gun Dog and AA dog sometimes on the same weekend.

She managed some placements over the last year including a second in a big five point stake so we knew we were on the right track.

This weekend she won a 21 dog GD stake and did so convincingly with a very strong forward race hitting all the right spots but doing so with speed and style. After about a five minute abscence we found her standing way out on a limb find with really nice style through the whole thing and master hunter manners through the bird work. She finished up going hard to the front at time into a thirty plus mph wind and just kept going like it was an hour stake.

Considering where she came from and how little it took to get her to such a level in a very short time I couldn't be more pleased with her. She's barely three so unless I screw something up I expect we'll see great things out of her in the future. CR

Congrats WildRose,

Sounds like a great trial for you. It also sounds like it would have been a great brace to ride and see your Abbey girl run!!
Congrats again.

Congrats CR.

Don't get too many "trial" dogs now - you won't have any that are useable for hunting you know.

Congratulations Charlie, on a very successful weekend. Winning the GD stake with Abbey must have you flying high right now. Enjoy the sensation...we look forward to hearing more good things about her in the future!
And keep up the good work!!!

Thanks, Yep Jerry as soon as Brian has his schedule nailed down and lets me know I'll have mine. Right now the tentative plan is to head up wednesday about dark maybe, stay through the futurity, and then come back probably for the GD.

I'm really looking forward to the LB pup. If he's half the dog that LB pup Brian and I had so much fun with this spring he'll be a nice addition.

Scott don't worry about that. Nobody around here gets to be a "real trial dog" until they first prove they are a real hunting birddog first. Dogs are just like horses. If they are all show and run I don't want to bother with them. Show me the hard blue collar work first and then we'll see if they can impress the judges.CR

Charlie

Congrats on the dog work this fall and the nuptials too.

Thanks again for letting me use your article for the GSPC of Minnesota newsletter. I got a decent amount of feedback for using such a good article.
