First NSTRA placement

Post by nhachman » Tue Mar 22, 2011 8:38 pm

My Brit Katie and I got our first NSTRA placement on Saturday at Pony Express CA. She was on fire with 5 finds, solid and steady points, and 5 retrieves to the hand. Her final score was 1005 points which was good for first place! We also finished the 3rd leg of her JH on Sunday.

Wish us luck at the Regionals!

Katie got another placement today at the Miami Co BDC trial in Prescott, KS. She went 5/5 and a back for 1049 points! It was enough for 2nd place behind another 5/5 and a back scoring 1090.

Great job Nick. Rooster went on Sunday to Whetstone, but the breeders ran him for me since I was working down in AR. He didn't pass because she relocated him on a bird and the judge didn't see what was going on - thought the dog had broken point. He found 5 birds she said.

Way to go on Katie. If you guys head over here to Macon, MO for any of the NSTRA in Clarence, there is room for an overnight stay with dog at our place in Macon.

That's too bad about the judging error, but it happens. Rooster is a good dog and well trained, I'm sure he'll finish his MH in short order. Thank you for your hospitality, I've been bitten by the NSTRA bug after winning twice with a young dog so I'm sure to be running in a lot more trials!

Electric, we did well for her age, but did not place. 48 dogs ran on Saturday at the MO-KAN regional. Katie went 3/3 and a back which put her high enough on the points board to advance to Sunday. Sunday was tough, her brace mate interfered on a retrieve which threw her off a little. She ended up getting 2/2 without a back, which didn't make the cut for the final. Only 4 months left until the season starts again, I can't wait.

That is a super start...Nothing to be a shamed of there at all :D ...next thing is start training for the train wrecks  like when dogs won't back and rip your bird out and your dog will stand there and come off and go hunt while your bracemate is leaving you the field to work...Make it fun and slowly work it...

Funny you should say this, on Saturday my brace mate did just that! Refused the back, pointed the bird, when the handler came up he broke and took the bird out. I took the interference and was able to call her back and moved on while he spent a good long while getting his dog off that bird which flew into an overgrown pond. I finished up 4/3 (730 points), missed a bird due to gunner error, the bird flushed up and around me where I thought the judge was. I was going to call safety but when I got turned around the judge was not there, and by the time I took a shot the bird was well out of range. I did get 3rd place however.

How did you do? I've got my last trial of the fall next weekend, I'm hoping for one more placement. This will be the last trial before my first child is born, so I'm sure I'll be limited to how many trials I'll be making it to in the spring.

Ran my first spring NSTRA trial on Saturday. Went 4/4 and took 2nd place. 8 points down, 10 to go for the championship. I think she's really getting the hang of it now, she's burning up the field and hitting her points hard. One that I witnessed was her running full speed down a fence line with the wind going across it. She hit scent, her head and shoulders turned into it and her rear slid around. She held it high and proud until I came and flushed the bird out and then made a nice retrieve.

Congrats ! Just remember 9 points must be from 1st place placements in order to receive Champion status. Good Luck.
