First Field Trial - a walking event

Post by RoostersMom » Mon Feb 27, 2012 7:24 am

Well folks, you convinced me to give it a try. We took the GSP pup (almost 10 months old) to a walking field trial on Sunday. She did well enough to place second in the Amateur Derby.... and went away with a first place in the Open Puppy. I'm not sure that I'm hooked, but I did enjoy the day. It helped that we had a Quail Forever Hunting Dog Challenge running across the way and I could run my Vizsla and our EP over there.

My husband took a 3rd over there with 16 dogs running with our "shelter" EP. Rooster (Vizsla) wasn't in contention because he has legs to MH, so those dogs can just run for fun. Wish me luck next weekend as we try to finish out his MH title (we need two passes yet).

Sounds like a fun day. Congrats. Good luck with the last two legs.

Congrates on the placement. Better be careful or you will get hooked. It was fun looking at the picture of the top three dogs from Sunday and knowing they were all rescues. I do think though my two are about to trade me in for a better handler.

Nice job. Although you may not be hooked, Did you watch any broke dog stakes for your future master hunter?

Congrats Elsa! We had fun too. Kindle didn't place but Joan found us later and told us she was placed 5th and how much she enjoyed watching her. I'm happy with that! Hopefully we will have good weather again! Your husband wouldn' happen to want to gun for a small number of seniors would he? Ours had to back out and we are having trouble finding anyone.

Carla,

He'll be snow goose hunting this weekend. He's totally worn out from Pheasant Fest and my award deal and then the walking trial. I think he's tired of me! I told him to take the whole weekend and shoot the "flying carp."

Ultra,

My MH dog is a very close working Vizsla. GREAT on pheasants and grouse, but really pretty tight working dog. I think I did too many youth hunts with launchers and small fields with him because he really is reeled in pretty close (usually less than 80 yards out). However, this little GSP pup has some wheels - and I had no idea what she was capable of - maybe we'll look into this a bit further on the field trials. I did have fun.

Elsa

ps, I hope you have good news tomorrow at the vets office!
