So do you think you are going to have a 300 yd dog or 600 to 1000 yd dog. I've got one of each and prefer the 300 yd dog. The 800 or 1000yd dog and I don't see eye to eye always. Much easier to buy the range of pup that works naturally at the range you are comfortable with.

Re: My little man
Start him young understanding that you are a team. The species you hunt will teach him productive range.
Many like to let a dog run (wild) for a year or so. That's when you can develop issues that you're going to have to fix later. Because they get a bit older and have developed bad habits, you're in for a challenge. It's a TOTALLY different approach and...somewhat dated.
He is one VERY nice looking pup...that is a given!
Congrats!!

Re: My little man
Yeah. I didn't know exactly what I had with my 1000yd dog. I let her roll that first year. 400yds by 4 months. 1000 yds by 9 months. Big mistake. When you only train a dog every 5 years you keep finding new ways to make mistakes. I've trained her to bend on the beep on the alpha, so I can hunt her any distance I want but neither one of us is totally happy about the arrangment. My male is a 3 to 400yds dog. I can hunt him and never say a word all day. A real pleasure to hunt with..Featherfinder wrote: ↑Fri Sep 13, 2019 2:31 pmStart him young understanding that you are a team. Re: My little man
Thinking he will be a 300 . I hunt a lot of grouse up here. Also sharps and huns. I do go for pheaz the odd time as well. But nothing in my mind can beat the huns in sask. Will see how he turns out. I hunted his grandpa for years . Lost him last year at 15. This guys body and style is a clone to him. Again thanks for all the replies and great comments. If ever in the neighborhood please stop by. I have thousands of acres to hunt on. GT
