i am not saying to not do junior hunter, just don't run a dog in anything until it is well broke on birds. if you don't have the other behaviors trained for higher levels, backing, retrieving ect that you can get away with. I would say a minimum is here, turning on name (these so that the dog will handle for you) and whoa so that you can train stop to flush, steady to wing and shot. at that point you can still run JH if you like without worrying about any set backs. train to a higher level then you want to compete and don't use trials or tests to "see what the dog will do" but to show what you KNOW the dog will do. that way you spend less time and money on entry fees and when you show up you will find that you are competing (if it is a trial) against only maybe 30% of the dogs there. most small trials, more then half of the dogs eliminate themselves. now of course this does not hold true in larger trials or nationals. these are just some thoughts, thats all. the most important thing is that you have fun, just try to not make it harder on yourself or the dog then it has to be. one good summer if the dog is old enough and you should be able to get it pretty steady.
