Bobwhite Quail wings

Post by momonga3 » Wed Nov 16, 2005 3:34 pm

Dear All,

My name is Soo hyung Eo and I am a graduate student studying "Bobwhite Quail" genetics in UGA. For my PhD, I am planning to examine biogeographical relationships and genetic structure among the bobwhite quail populations. To do this, I need to collect wild wings from the WHOLE distribution range of the birds.

I would like to get a few sets of samples of bobwhite quail wings from each State. I need about 20 wings in each set, preferably from same locality (e.g., same county), but not same coveys (i.e., one from a covey). So far, I have contacted following states: AL, FL, GA, KS, KY, MO, NC, NJ, TX, VA, and TN.

If you can help me collect wings or let me know any contact person, it will be very grateful.
Thank you so much.

Soo hyung Eo

I just got back from Oklahoma but have some friends still hunting out there. I'll ask them to save some wings and bring them back next week.

What's the best way to ship them to you?

Many hunters have emailed me to help my research.
I appreciate those who have given or promised bobwhite wing samples and have shown concerns about the study.
So far, I might have enough samples from OK, KS, and TX.
However, I would like to have more samples from NE, IA, IL, IN, OH, northern MO, AR, MS, LA, and other northern states.
If you can help me, I am so happy.
Below is a simple protocol for collection of bobwhite wings.

Protocol for collection of bobwhite wings:

Generally, we would like to collect about 20 wings from a particular location (e.g., county), and it should be from different covey (i.e., just one wing from a covey). That is, one wing per bird, one bird per covey, and about 20 coveys (birds) per county.

Hunter-killed wings:

Place a single wing in the provided envelope, providing as much data as possible. Instructions and blanks are given on the envelopes, but we would generally like to have information such as the following (‘state’, ‘county’ names and ‘collector’ are required. The others are optional):

Spatial (in order of importance):
State, County, Coordinates, Town, Course.

Collection:
Date Collected, Sex of bird (M/F), Age(adult/Immature), Collector (e.g. hunter killed/collected through other means),.

If possible, please place wings in refrigerator or freezer. If this is not possible, please keep them in a cool, dry location.

I'll see what I can do on some IL birds but as far as 20 different coveys I am not to sure of, as I don't hae a way to separate birds in my bag but I'll see what I can do.

You could put a zip tie on one bird from the covey, and when you are cleaning birds save a wing from the ziptied birds.
