Western Chukar hunt with the GDF boys!

Post by crittercontrol » Tue Jan 17, 2006 10:21 pm

Every now and again I become wild with fits of fanciful delight, and somehow get swindled into going on a cross-county bird hunt. Last weekend I succumbed to such a fit, and come what may I was going on a Chukar hunt. I have since started taking my medication again....

We met up with a friend, who was gracious enough to point us in the right direction. He even cooked us dinner, let us sleep in his camper, and even drove us around. I tried for a foot massage, but I guess every man has his limits.

We had a wonderful time, saw some new and exciting county, and heck, we even managed to bag a few chukar.

I’ve heard it said that bird dog people are great. But don’t let ‘em fool ya, bird dog people are the BEST! Next time I’m sure I’ll get that foot masasage....trust me I needed it!

Cool trip. Great pictures. Something is missing from those pictures. Hmmm. Not sure what it is. Oh wait. How 'bout a fat guy with a bum knee? Yeah that's it.

Geez, I could have at least got a phone call with a "neener neener neener" or maybe you could have honked and flipped me off as you drove by my house.

TAK was probably just worried about my safety, there might have been a river near there and nobody wanted to hear my whine all day after taking an unplanned swim. I completely understand.

Glad you guys made the trek. I had to keep the kids all weekend anyway, it was my wife's weekend to work. I have nothing going this weekend. Hint hint.

I thought you'd been asked! News to me. 'Whole time I kept saying, "We need to get 12V out here and into some chukars."

I'll give ya a jingle a little later. Its been crazy around here the last few days, but we must swing a hunting trip of some kind this weekend!

I'm off the meds again!

As "Host" the hunt could have been better but was great otherwise. Without having but a couple weeks to plan for this trip things didnt go as planed and made for a bit of an uncomfortable situation.

The birds were there and as always never cooperate when you want them to. A total bag of I think 11 birds was pretty good for one day. Everyone got to bag a couple. TAK could have shot a couple more but was more interested in snapping a shot of the dogs on point. Critter Control and his little gordon are a fine match. The two of them managed to find enough birds that he shot up a box of shells in a couple hours time. Addict and his two pups a GWP and a GSP make for a wonderfull team. Bird populations had better beware because next fall they will be some spactacular bird dogs that will put alot of feather in the game bag.

12 volt you did have the invite long before the trip was ever planned but since you had the knee surgery I didnt think it would be best this year. Next year you are first on the list to come.

Snips, the country is big and it is steep in places but age has nothing to do with getting up and down hills. it is just done at a slower pace. I know people that are well into their 60's that still chase chukar every week. Than again a good bird dog and some decent shooting you dont have to walk very much anyhow.

Thank you guys for sharing the weekend with me I hope you will be able to do it again.

Casper you have one part wrong!? CritterControl shot well over a box of shells at the birds on the morning hunt only!

Casper it was a great hunt and you delivered what you said, "birds"! Good food and a warm dry place to sleep, No shame in that!

As soon as I can get my camera to a computer to down load some pictures I will post some. Casper is right I should put the camera away at times when the dogs are on point and we are hunting very wild Chukars! But thing is the Chukars that I let go will only have little ones next year, and I always have the pictures!

I was real impressed with all the dogs out there including your Dads little F-Brit.

I am glad you had food for us. Critter was talking about only eating what we bagged! Glad he is not a big eater!

I was looking at that hill, and I know my dog would not point until he was at the top, with me at the bottom, or visa/versa. I think I would have a flush command. :P Critter, I have a Gorden in my kennel that could be the twin of your dog. I need to take a pic of her and show you before she leaves.

The pictures are in the afternoon. In the AM we were in some kinder country. Still some hill climing but not bad at all.

The only time that the heart rate came up is when a dog went on point at the top of the hill! Then the hike up was not bad seeing a dog standing! Then 9 times out of 10 the bird ran over the top and started down the other side and with a release the dogs would go and pin them down! Then the camera and then.... drop camera fast and grab gun and drop gun down the hill! Cus like a son-of-a-smile!

Casper,

Thanks again for the trip. You are a great host and a great cook!! Can't wait to have you cook some more deer up for us. That was worth the drive out! I will have to get me a deer tag this year just to make that dish. You've got some good dogs on your hands and can't wait to see Belle's progress this next season.

We saw lots of birds and some nice scenery. It was nice to look at the rugged landscape while catching my breath. You can see by CC's posts that when your up top you can see for miles around.

We will have to make this an annual trip!! I just wish we could have taken a week to hunt out there. I will try not to snore so loud next time!! I slept good though so it couldn't have been that loud!!
