I can only say that I have shot 2 banded woodcock. Both were shot in La. One was banded 2 weeks prior within a mile of where I shot it. The other was banded in Maryland 2 years prior.

I'm a bander in NW Minnesota - was out scouting Thursday (April 15) and had a hen flutter flight and do the broken wing display. It has to be too early for chicks this far north, and I didn't have any of my gear with me so I didn't search too hard. Planning to check that area in the cool of the morning this week and see what we can find. I'm betting the peak hatch will be at least a week early this year, which for us will be late next week.

Haven't seen shot a woodcock in many years as i lived in AK- moved to Wisc but not many in our area- then my young lab flushed one on our place last week and I heard 3 more- great if they are coming back. i will avoid that area of our place for a while now.

Went out on the 21st and found a nest near the spot I flushed the hen in the earlier post. A colleague checked the nest Tuesday (April 27) and it appeared to have hatched (sometime between Saturday and Tuesday). That is extremely early for this area. It is raining now, but as soon as it dries out I'll be out there looking for those chicks....

We are anticipating the peak hatch next week.

Are there many woodcock banders in Minnesota? I believe the birds that we get in SW Missouri come straight down from Minn. I have never shot a banded woodcock even though I have killed several woodcocks since 1990. None of my woodcock hunting acquaintances have taken a banded woodcock either.
