WHAT IS A SUCCESSFUL SEASON

Post by ridgerunner » Fri Aug 05, 2011 10:49 am

I was just wandering what most folks constitute as a good season...I know I set a goal for flushes, productive points , and a few dead birds...just wandering what you all think?

Appreciating the dogs.
Enjoying the day.
Respecting the resource.
That makes for a successful season.
No goals but those.

Finding birds and the dogs handling them properly. If they are pups, I only want them to find some birds anything after the flush doesnt matter. I try to make sure the dogs are more broke than they entered the season also. If you cant teach them anything on wild birds ( and let them become unbroke) you have failed yourself, the dogs, and the breed. If I shoot a couple then that makes it even better, although I raise birds and get to shoot a couple thousand a year so it doesnt really matter to me that much anymore.

Getting into birds, dogs getting good opportunities to work the birds, and spending time with my favorite hunting partners, Dad, brother and my two cousins. Anytime I go at least one of them will be with me, and usually two of them.

3 signs of a successful season at my place-

1- The dogs are a little better then they were when it started
2- Spent a lot of time with good friends
3- A little meat in the freezer
I have English Pointers because they don't ever grow up either...

I hunt about 50 days each season, I like to kill around 50 birds and have the dogs work birds every day out.

I consider a good season one in which I move birds and the dogs get a lot of dog work. I killed one bird in Tn last year, but I had some really good dog work on a bunch of other days. I enjoy spending time in the woods and enjoying what the lord has given me. So to me a successful season is the one I starts and ends in good health for me and my family.

One that I am able to get into the field with good friends, good dogs, and good health. Nothing else is real important.

Nothing like being in nature and being with Friends. I could care less if I don't see a bird as long as I am having fun with friends and hanging out with my dog.

If I can get my son out with me and have him enjoy the hunt(s), its a success.

I don't mind shooting a few birds myself, and getting some pictures on the dog on point. :D

If I'm having fun and everybody comes home that is a success in my books.

I will have to admit, when it comes to squirrel hunting, it is about getting my limit! Too hot for me right now though and they are not cutting hickory nuts yet. They should be starting on them with in the next week and then towards the end of the month, pecans in the river bottoms. :D

Remember my quote said good friends. :P And killing something often relates to being able to hit it. Just a reminder so you can work on both a little more!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8) 8)

Get into some birds, have the dogs work them well, get some time with my buddies and bag a few birds. All which lead to some good stories.

ridgerunner,
Every season I get to return to enjoy Gods forest, run my dogs and enjoy good sporting company, makes for a successful season. What we accomplish is a way of life
handed down thru generations, a respect for Gods wilderness and understanding how God wants us to live makes for a successful season.

Last season was my best season ever. It started with Dove in Sept and ended with Quail the end of February. I know that doesn't sound like much especially since ther weren't alot of birds taken. To me what made the season so great was it was the first season that my daughter went with me. She got her own gun and we spent alot of time just walking behind our dog together and spending time without interruption or electronics.
So to me a successful season is being out and enjoying the time with family and a mediocre old dog.
I'd rather live on the side of a mountain, than wander through canyons of concrete and steel.

Well I have my first gundog pup this season and I'm hoping my wife comes along on a couple hunts with us. She has no interest in hunting but adores the pup so I'm hoping she decides to tag along on the nicer days this fall. As for the pup, if he can progress and point some wild grouse his first season out I will consider that a good season.
I don't like people who don't like dogs......

I went on my first hunts last year without my own dog since I was 7 years old. Was not real excited when we left, but my dad really wanted me to go. After walking right next to him behind his two britts, and not taking off on my own, I realized what was really important. Time in the field in the middle of nowhere with my dad. I think he is just as excited about me having the new pup as I am.

could not have said it better...heck if i need poultry i can always go to Kroger or my local butcher. I just love the dog work, the adventure of going someplace new, planning the excursion, being out in the fall air...those are my goals!

Not getting shot... Any time out in the field (even on a crappy day) is a successful hunt...
