Pratt Kansas pheasants

Post by birdogg42 » Sun Aug 05, 2012 5:15 pm

Me and two other buddies are planning a pheasant hunting trip out to Pratt Kansas. A buddy's dad lives out there and was wondering what the bird hatch is like this year?

I not thinking it should be good, they havent had much to any rain down there!!! I was thru S central Ks, last week and they were already cutting corn. So you might want to look else where in my home state. You may call the local Ks Dept of wildlife and see what they say.

Heck, I've already seen cut corn here in NE. Will be very interested to see what the drought has done to the bird numbers....

Does anyone have a report from the Pratt area?

I had read on another forum that it is beyond dry there. Which will not bode good for birds. Coming to KS is a crap shoot. Just because your saying your going to the Pratt area, or really any other area of the state means very little this year. Depends on the ground you hunt in a certain area. I've heard reports of one area being horrible this year and another report of the same area being good.

Bottom line is it can be good in poor areas and vice versa. Definately a crap shoot. But you never know until you go. Can't kill birds on the couch.

On our way back from Kansas. Four of us killed 18 pheasants and 10 quail in 3 days. Had a good time and will be going back next year.

Mike,
That is better than what I would have expected based on prior comments and "lack of birds" this year.
It is hard to get the average up to 2 birds per day per hunter. For 4 hunters, that would be 8 pheasants per day. You all averaged 6 birds per day. Not bad at all.
Toss in the quail and you all were into birds a lot for the 3 days. Made the trip worth while. Very nice.

Thats not too bad.

But does the number of birds bagged really equal up to how successful the hunt was? I think not.

Glad to hear you had a good time and got your dogs into some birds. Hopefully this spring will be more suited to better nesting conditions and you can have even more bird contacts for your dogs.

For having three guys that haven't ever pheasant hunted and three dogs that havent ever been on pheasants before. We had a heck of a time and met a few guys from Kansas that we made a friendship with. They invited us back next year. So I would say our hunt couldn't have been any more successful.

Absolutely!

So how did your pointers do on the birds? Did they learn the way of the phez pretty quick?

It took them about one day. The whole running bird thing kind of threw them for a loop. But they came around. The last two days we had some pretty good dog work. All three dogs tore atleast one pad but they were still going. They ran 60 miles on the garmin. Not bad for two 8 yr old gyps and a four year old male.
