ND Duck Hunt

Post by hoffmann35 » Thu Sep 28, 2006 7:03 am

I'm heading up to the Devil's Lake area next Friday and was wondering what the North Dakota folks here think the duck situation looks like. We are going to hunt the fields the first few days and hit some potholes after a little scouting. Have the farmers started to harvest yet? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I was driving East to Grand Forks this morning and driving beside me was a pickup heaping with snow geese.. Granted there may have been decoys and such below them but the dead geese went from side to side and back to front. Someone had a good shoot. There's plenty of birds (Ducks and Geese) in that area and within the last week northern birds have started to move into the region. It has been dry, but there's still plenty of water around. When there's fewer ponds it just concentrates the birds. Which leads one to a morale question better saved for another time.

Also Check out a website called nodakoutdoors.com (?) most of the people on this site are from ND and they will be chatting about the hunting situation.

Make sure you get some of the PLOTS maps for the area, you can print them off the Game and Fish website. There's a lot of posted land up that way, but if you ask nicely you may get on.

The farmers are harvesting a few weeks earlier this year then in the past.

Have you been up here before?

Thanks for the reply. This is my first time going there, but everyone else has been there for at least the past 5 years. One of the guys has relatives up that way that give permission to hunt their land. Someone dropped out of the hunt and I was the replacement. I'm looking forward to this trip and thanks for letting me know that the ducks are pushing down.

hoffmann35 I hunt just a little south and west of DL don't count on very many potholes having water this fall there summer was very very dry. The ranch we hunt has 37 potholes and sloughs and better than half are dry. If you do find water a lay out blind will be a big help. Good luck We leave Oct 5th start hunting on the 7th.

hoffmann35 we are coming from Charleston SC just under 1800 miles to Woodworth ND. It will take us about 29 hours to get there. I talked to the rancher saturday and the weather is still pretty warm up there. But that can change over night. What LIC. Did you buy? I hope you got the any zone any time one. Just in case you have to travel. Good luck.

Buy your license online and it will save some time and it is easier. Here is a link to NDGF

You can print out the plots maps online also if you were looking to go after some sharptails.
