3 Days Sport

Post by Dave C » Sun Jan 06, 2013 2:47 pm

Had 3 good days Hunting over Christmas and New Year.
The 26th i have already posted in my Boxing day thread.

The 27th was a good day hunting round 2 farms i have permission on, with my 2 lads and their new shotGun Christmas present.
It was their first time shooting so i didn't expect much, it was mainly getting them used to the safety side of shooting and handling the gun properly.
The 3 of us walked the hedges and storm belts of the farms working the dog and i took a few birds, but it was good just to be out with my lads.

The 28th was another shoot day with my syndicate pals, the dog was as eager as the 1st day and again worked solidly.
The day started misty

But luckily it cleared as the day went on

Was another good day and at the last minute we decided to have a Duck flight, the dog was tiring by then but sat nicely next to my hide and put in 4 good retrieves from the pond.

Well i couldn't ask for any more from this little bitch, she put in 3 solid days hunting and retrieving and then a Duck flight on the last night.
She is turning out to be a real cracker and got a well deserved night by the fire.

I really enjoy the photos of your hunts. Please keeping post them and lots of them too!

I have to ask, what is "boxing day". Also, are those released birds or is there a wild population of pheasants? And what are the smaller birds in the pic?

When you say duck flight are you decoying the pond then?

Looks so much different than hunting here. I remember when I was in the UK we would take a road trip somewhere and looking out across the country side I always wondered what type of game was out there. I thought it was really cool to see a mallard duck on a pond or creek because it was a little bit "home" to me while I was away. I'm a waterfowler for the most part.

I have a good friend who was introduced to Springers while there and even brought a couple home if I remember correctly. This would have been the late 80's or so.

Very nice Dave, thanks for sharing the photos. Did you get a litter out of Fern or have you decided to wait? She looks great.

Sorry, Boxing Day is what the UK call the day after Christmas Day, which is traditionaly a Shooting and Hunting day.

A Duck Flight is when we feed a pond to incurage the wild ducks, then wait at dusk for them to come in, we shoot our pond about every 3 weeks and have taken about 75 since september, alot of guys i know are having a bad season on the ducks, due to all the flooding we are having, but i cant complain :D

duckn66, where abouts in the UK were you, the country is so different in the North compaired to the South, the North having its great Dales, Fells and Moors :D

I was going to keep 1, but changed my mind at the last minute as i dont need another Lab yet, i will keep one off her at a later date.

I just put some upto date pics of her on the "Photo of the day" post on the General section.

We were around Lincolnshire. That was many years ago though. I was a basically a kid then and really not interested in what the world had to offer and seeing history. I was more interested in getting home to shoot ducks back then!

I still just want to get home and shoot ducks

I am alot further north than that in Teesdale, its where they film Robin Hood with Kevin Cosner, where he fights little John at the waterfall, the Waterfall is called High Force and is 20 minutes from my house.
The further north you go the more open space and the country starts getting hilly and rouged.

Bye the way the other birds in the picture are Woodcock and Snipe.

Oh ok. That's pretty cool that your close to that area. I bet it was nuts around there during the filming.

Sure would like to go back to the UK sometime. Keep the pics coming! Beautiful countryside.
