Hunting Partner woes

Post by gjw » Sat Oct 07, 2006 8:53 pm

 Hi all!!! I've posted this story on a different forum, but thought it might be fun to post it here and get some reactions. Here goes.....

I've got a good partner who is great to hunt with and has the highest ethics when it comes to hunting. He has but one fault.....he invites!!
A couple years ago, I got the ok to hunt some prime land for upland birds, this land belongs to a woman I work with and her husband. Well, I asked my partner if he'd like to go, but I said just him and me and one more person (total 3). I already told the land owners it would be 3 of us only. Well the big day arrived and I went to pick up my partner, the other guy we asked couldn't make it. Well my freind said to stop at a town on the way up, I thought sure (breakfast or coffee maybe). When we stopped I got out to go to the cafe, he said no, no were waiting on a couple of others, perplexed I asked what? Well here comes 3 trucks with 7 guys (total 9). What do you say? Off we went. Got to the place, I went to check in with the owners - everyone else sat in their trucks - I chated with the woman for about 15 min or so, came back and one of the tribe said "What? did you get something to eat or did you get a piece?" This clown was a royal pain in the a##!!! Smart A## comments all day long. Couldn't hit a bull in the a## with a banjo, but claimed every bird that was shot!!!! Time to go home after a very very good hunt (birds that is not the circus clowns!!). Everyone was patting my friend on the back telling him how great he was getting us on this land and for the great hunt!! And lets do it again next week, of course he said you bet with a big smile, after all he was the hero!! (as you may guess this still galls me). They all left and didn't say thanks or kiss my a## to the landowners!! I stopped in to say thanks and explain about what happened (they were great about it and I'm still allowed to hunt there - just me and my son, now). On the way back, my friend and I had a very long heart to heart. It has not happened again...so far.

So, what do you all think and do you have any similar stories - these are kind of fun. And after all time heals.

Take care and Good luck!!!!!

Thats a shame. People like that are what make land owners detest hunters. It just takes a few bad ones to ruin it for the good ones.

That would be a former hunting partner here.......

Now, now, he is a good guy and as I said he HAD this invite problem - it's over now. In fact he also spoke with the landowner after the fact - and everything is ok. I've gone with way worse people.

Just wanted to have a little fun and get some other stories going.

Thanks for the comments - this is a great forum with grat people!!!!!

God Bless!!!!

Likewise! When I am a guest, I am exactly that and feel that I have no right to make invitations to others, unless I'm asked if anyone else would maybe like to go and then I'm very selective about who I might bring. It's simply all about manners....

I've had it happen to me, as well as found out after the fact that the uninvited guests returned on their own.... Plain and simple here, they are former hunting buddies. Like Bruce, an invite is a sacred thing to be honored, not abused. ..."pear"

Right on Pear. In this story there is no way we would have even gone to the farm since I had already told them there would only be three. That wouldn't be hard to explain to my friend when he said there were more coming. You already had told him so you had every right and even responsibility to keep to the agreement with your friend and the land owner.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

We have had the same problem. One of the nephews brought a friend out to hunt a few times, which was fine. But then one day here were friend, his dad, his uncle and a couple of other guys driving around our hunting area. They wanted to know if "we" had permission on a particular piece of land that day.

They have been told they are not welcome.
