Kansas pheasant hunting

Post by lvrgsp » Sat Nov 04, 2006 7:31 pm

I am planning on heading to Kansas the end of December for some upland game hunting. My question is, what should I expect the weather and late season birds to be like, and where would be the best place to go?
I was thinking of going to the Dodge City, or Garden City area.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As long as I can get into some birds everyday I will be more than happy, quail, pheasants, chickens, and huns any of them would be good for me.

I actually prefer late season birds. Really hoping to see how my 15 mos. old male pup is going to open up on the prairies, that is what I am pushing for.

I just got back from SW Kansas (Meade/Sublette/Plains area) and it was warm. We went out for the opening weekend of pheasant season and it was tough, the birds were in standing milo and none of the farm we were hunting had milo planted. We didn't do to bad considering the weather and everything, we mainly hunted cornes and tailwater pits and long ditches where we could find them.
I saw so many quail it made me sick, quail season doesn't come in till this weekend and I had to watch so many quail fly over my head, it was difficult.

I just returned myself. The bird numbers are way down. We killed one young rooster. Yes one. The state forcast is right in the money. I usually go back a couple times a year. I am going to North Dakota know because of the low numbers of birds.

Razor where were you at? I am hoping in that going later will have the birds holding a little better. I am pretty sure I will be going to the Dodge City area and hunting the surrounding areas.

Thanks all
