First pheasants for me and my dog.

Its been a while since I posted here. I have been to busy fishing.
I went to the Imperial valley today to hunt pheasant. Its about 2 hours east of San Diego. I wasn't sure how my dog would do because he spent his whole first hunting season on quail. So we started hunting at 8am and we had our first one in the bag within ten minute. This was after my dog flushed up 8 birds before I could even get the gun loaded. I know rookie mistake. But he was only 40 yards from the truck. We had our 2nd one in the bag just after 9 am. I can't believe how well these birds can hide in such short grass. I am hooked. I'll be out there again in 2 weeks. Here's some pictures of the day.

Congrats on your pheasants with your dog. It is always great to see our dogs get into a bird they have not in the past.

I got them out of the cover that you see in the first two pictures. If you look closely you can see taller clumps of bermuda grass through out the field. It is some skinny cover but its taller than it looks in the picture.

I don't know if they are. But they are not on this map from there website:

I went south of I-8 to and west of Calexico. As a matter of fact the birds I missed flew right into Mexico. Mexico is less than 100 yards away and separated by a canal. I talked to the Border Patrol on Sunday when I went down there and they told me I shouldn't even bother with that Field because it was like a war zone down there the night before. Lots of illegals crossed over there and ran through the fields.

That's neat. Good for you guys!! Those are some beautiful birds!

If that's a self portrait of your dog and you, well done! I tried it the other day with comical results.

Yes it is. I just used the corner of my trucks tailgate and the timer.
