Bunny Hunting in snow
I posted before about a "head shake" my GSP had. Well,...took him snowshoe hunting 2 days ago, and although he didn't "point" or chase the rabbit (my buddy's gsp chases them) my boyfriend got a shot at it, and nailed it. Upon the fetch command, Bullet ran into the chest deep snow to get his hare! And, of course 0 head shake.
We also set up a few snares around the area for fun, and ended up getting another one. Bullet was so thrilled on this fuzzy critter...I told him to fetch after I laid the hare onto the ground, and he proudly picked it up, and trotted down the road at heel with it! Last year he wanted nothing to do with them...and i mean NOTHING. This year, it was like a light went off in his head to retrieve and hold them! My question for you guys is how do you properly train a dog on hares? Or is it basically run off of bird training? Ovbiously a rabbit won't hold like a pheasant or a woodcock will, but, is it alright for them to chase after a rabbit?

Hunting in the snow really?
Nice going snow is the best hunting conditions in my opinion.
