Southwest Gambels Quail Hunt w/pics
After watching a SW quail hunt at 12Volts place Friday night, I got the incurable hankerin’ to try it out for myself. Plus it'd be a chance to get out of the frigged cold Utah winter. Brrrrrrrr!
Not! According to the weather man, this was the first time they've had any substantial snow fall (1-6 inches) in over 20 years. And the temperature was a balmy 20 degrees. Southwest my arse...
Anywho, turns out we were lucky, as not many folks have ever got to hunt Gambels quail in the SNOW!
One must have sustenance, and when we stopped for fuel Jonesy decided to partake of the jelly-filled donuts! Busted.
Finally, Quail Country!
The Brush choked draws held the sign.
Jonesy found and retrieved this cockbird.
The terrain was harsh, and evenings were spent back at the hotel picking out cactus spines.
The deserts were full of other wildlife. A desert pheasant...
Wish we had these "trees" in our northern Utah deserts.
They make for great photo shots.
We found the birds in ever habitat strata; here in a Juniper forest.
And in more traditional haunts...
Brings a "tear-drop" to your eye...
Desert wildlife.
We decided to name this place "cow-patty" hill.
Love of the game.
Soon I'll have so many out-of-state "annual trips" to attend I wont be able to hunt in Utah!

Awesome Pics! Reminds me of where I got my start in upland hunting. My Dad and I used to chase Gambels and scaled quail in southeast Arizona when I was a kid. I'm trying to put together a hunt in the next couple of years. I want to get Dad back out there before he gets too old. Kinda show my appriciation for all the hunting trips he took me on.

I'm telling ya Caleb you need to start sending this to Pointing Dog Journal, they'll pay for yor trips. Contact Jake Smith show him your work and I know you can write down in a journal about your trips they'll edit it and you use your great pics. I'm telling ya, how do you think Ben O. Williams got his start.

Had a Gambels and Mearns hunt in Az. last week. We had snow as well, but it melted with the sun.
