Moon’s first season is underway.

Post by Willie T » Sun Nov 13, 2022 9:26 pm

Moon’s is getting an education on birds. Still green as all get out but he is hunting for the gun and I like the way he runs. This is his first season and I’ve had him in a lot of wild birds and they are taking him to school. Hunting upland birds he is opening up his range when he is not in birds and starting to assimilate some things about handling them. Still making his share of mistakes but not shorting me on effort and I like him. By design I am running him mostly on birds that run and he is figuring out he needs to keep the wind on them when they run out from under his point rather than tracking and busting them. I like a dog that relocates on its own and that is how I go at it. In time he will learn to read the cover he is hunting and the fine line of how much pressure to put on a runner to get it to sit without busting. Right now it is a work in progress. I also use my pointing dogs as dedicated retrievers and included a few pics of some of that.
First dove

First Hun. This was a nice piece of work. Pointed the covey at 50 yards or a little more in low diffuse cover. Head up high in the wind.

First wild rooster. Tracked these birds around 300 yards to the edge of a near vertical drop off before he got them pointed.

A few more coming.

Another limit of Roosters because I like the way he was running.

Great pics. Thanks. Looks like that snow goose was a challenge for Moon. :)

The dog has to find the handle on geese. The snow goose in that picture was literally his first goose. The speck was later the same morning and a bigger bird but he had already figured out the handle at the base of the wing. Desire carried the first few geese until he worked out how to tote them. Still a lot of ground to cover but a solid pup.

Youthful exuberance gets the best of him at times but he is a fun pup. It hasn’t been all pixie dust though. He got snake bit in Texas and porcupine’d on the high plains.

Yikes, glad he made it through and hopefully he learned from both.

Great looking dog. Looks similar to my boy, I run him on upland and waterfowl aswell. Some of these pointers have great retrieving drive.

He's a solid brown GSP. His first season too. Seems like he just figured out ducks and now the snow is here so grouse and rabbits until the new year.

wn on a GSP Nick
Just for your Info. Brown GSPs are referred to as liver. he would be solid liver. Not a big deal, but some breeders consider it an insult if call them something else. Especially Chocolate...........Cj

Moon is a Pudelpointer. I have a six year old Pudelpointer that I really like. Moon is from a breeding I had hoped would happen…

Wasn't sure if he was a Pudelpointer or a stocky GSP, now I know, great looking pup nonetheless.

Did you get him from Jack? I just got mine from Bearded Lady Pudelpointers. He is a new NAPPA breeder. So far I like him a lot. I hope I can do him justice.
