Huns

Post by RatDog » Mon Dec 16, 2024 8:40 pm

Seems like everywhere I look this year I find a nice covey of partridges. Other day I parked the truck stepped out and shot a double Image around here an average covey is like 8-10 birds I’ve seen some this year that have 2-3 times that!

Most game birds run in cycles--up years and down years. You must of had a good year with a mild preceding winter, no hail during Spring, good cover, good weather during nesting & good feed for the young. A bird bonanza!! Congrates on the hunting!! Nice pictures of your dog. :D :D :D

Thanks! I guess some birds is the trade off for terrible skiing. Might be the same story this year. Part of why I’ve been hunting so much is it’s been like 50 degrees and sunny when normally there’s a foot of snow on the ground.

I sure do love the little buggers! So challenging to shoot. I’ve had more two-fer doubles than straight up doubles this year. If you can find them with barrel two you’re on it.

They’re so loyal to a spot. So long as you don’t stomp the covey they’ll be there a couple more times that year and for years to come

Matter of fact me and Smelly Nelly are about to go find a few right now

Found two or three coveys several times. I lost track of which covey we were bumping into when. BIG COVEYS! Due to some spastic shooting by yours truly I only managed 3 birds but we had a lot of fun chasing them up and down the hill

Limit is 8 here. Anyone ever get 8 in a day?! I have not. For sure 5 but I’m not even sure I’ve ever gotten 6-7. I’m aware it’s not the point and doesn’t cross my mind when I’m out and about but any red blooded man wants to hit the limit at least once. Why is it so high?! Might as well say limitless! I’d be willing to bet it’s never happened someone got to 8 and said something along the lines of “oh darn we’ve got more in the tank but I suppose that’s it.” I’m sure the reaction is “oh my goodness we actually did it!” They say in the regs to consider the impact of taking 8 out of a single covey. That’s not a cool thing to do, not sure it’s worth mentioning given it also seems close to impossible for an individual to accomplish.

A good day for us is 3 decent size coveys maybe 1-2 you get two cracks at. With only the two shells, killing 8 out in that scenario is like me AND the dog throwing no-hitters (I suppose if you have the allowable 3 that changes things but not a lot, third shot is usually a Hail Mary.) From what I watch of people doing similar hunting on youtube my shooting is at least average. Maybe twice I’ve been above when they flush out of a draw and the whole covey flares or swings right in front of me and I kill 4 with the two barrels, triple then a single. That’d definitely help! There’s always next season Image
