New years hunt

Post by zodiakgsps » Tue Jan 01, 2008 10:14 pm

Had an awesome day at a place called Homestead Hunting today, Joe wanted to take his bro on a hunt while he was here on leave from Japan. Had never been there before & really liked the grounds. Our group consisted of myself(I played guide, they did all the shooting), Joe, his brother Tom and bil Jim, & the dogs - Buck, Mac, Tara & Chief. This is my idea of breaking in the new year right, LOL!!! You'll have to excuse some of the pics....I'm not to great with a camera!
Buck & Mac on point, Joe & Tom going in to work the bird:

Tried to get a pic of a flying bird....this is the closest I got, Mac pointing a pheasant - it was running down the redbrush & popped out in the opening, the guys are in the brush, couldn't get them in pic too though:

Buck retrieving a chukar, it had set it's wings & glided to that far treeline:

Tara on point with brother Chief backing her:

I could have used a bit less of the weather though......snowed hard most of the day(barely snow when we arrived, upon leaving roads were awful, half hour ride home turned to over an hour) and had 20-30 MPH winds, boy can the snow hurt when it's hitting you in the face that hard!!
Birds were running bad, didn't want to get up, good flyers when they did though. Still had a blast & sure beat going to work!!

Definitely a good time!!! Been out several times for grouse, had a couple days with 18-22 flushes, and a few with only 6-10, but only bagged one, Joe got that one, I'm a horrible shot, especially on grouse.
Grouse were definitely way jumpier than usual this year, not holding well at all quite tough hunting them......went after a snow, fox & yote tracks everywhere, never saw so many. Am thinking this could have made a difference in them.

We give dogs time we can spare, space we can spare and love we can spare.
And in return, dogs give us their all. It's the best deal man has ever made.
