Hunting in Nebraska

Post by steady on point » Fri Sep 12, 2008 12:54 pm

I plan to be in Grand Island, Nebraska for work Sept 23rd & 24th and would like to add a couple of days chasing Grouse and Prairie Chickens around within a couple of hours of there. . I will travel with dogs, guns etc, I only need a place to find birds. Any recommendations on public areas to hunt or a place I could pay a "normal" fee to to hunt their ground for a day or 2?

I checked with some the NAGA locations and the cost is way too high.

Thanks

Drive north 1 hr to Halsey, Nebraska National Forrest. It is mainly grasslands and rolling hills. There are tons of Sharptails there. You can hunt all day and not see another soul, It is great. Drive clear to the south edge of it and that is where we have found the most grouse. I think you can also hunt around Sherman and Merrit resevoirs, have heard of guys shooting a lot of birds around Sherman. Either one of those places is sure to be a good bet. Walk ridges about 3/4 the way up from the bottom. If its hot walk on the breezey side and north slopes. If it's cool walk the south slopes out of the wind and in the sun.

You can also get a CRP MAP atlas. (managment acess program) It is a county by county map that lists private land that is open to public for hunting. I shoot a lot of pheasants off of these places and have been told that there is grouse in a lot of them out west. I still would go to Halsey first over anything them drive up to Sherman res.

My family loves them. Cube it up and soak in Italion dressing for 24 hrs. Wrap in bacon with onion, jalapeno and bell pepper, secure with a toothpick and return to dressing for 1 hr. Then just grill or smoke. MMMMMMMMMMMMM Goooood!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Halsey is a good spot. There was enough rain in the sandhills this year, so the numbers are good. Hunted in the dunes this last weekend. Limited on both Sat and Sun in less than an hour. Shot doves the rest of the day on sat. :)
