we have a 3 month old GSP and want to start getting him out in the field... I would think that he needs some protection like boots or something, or is that overkill? we'll take advice... we live in the greater Phoenix AZ area

Lots of stickers in the desert, but you should be ok. We always took our pups out without boots. Just keep an eye on what's in the area and where your pup is going. Those little feets need to get toughened up. I'm always more worried about glass than anything.
We hunt the southern NV and northern AZ desert with our GSPs. Lots of boots out there to choose from. Stay away from the bargain basement types. Our GSPs wore right through a pair of ebay specials "kevlar" cordura boots within an hour of chasin gambels through rough desert terrain. We are presently on our second season with the uninsulated lewis boots. They seem to hold up well. You just have to pre-tape their ankles with med tape, then duct tape the boot tops on over med tape. It can be a challenge when you're working with a wired GSP
