Southern Nevada Chukar Hunt

Post by cgbirddogs » Sat Dec 06, 2008 5:38 pm

The good news is we seen lots of birds (about 100 between 9 and 1). The bad news is we didn't kill a one.
You win some and you lose some. Believe it or not, there ARE chukar south of Tonapah in Nevada. This hunt took place
about 45 minutes from Vegas. Matt, Maddie is turning into one heck of a chukar dog. If I could just kill a few for her!

This first photo is the "lay of the land". Pretty isn't it?

This next photo is of Maddie holding a big covey of chukar. Mark, my new hunting buddy from Texas, made the proverbial mistake of chasing chukar uphill. They put a move on him and was gone.

This last photo is of Mark and Maddie taking a break about the 3rd hour in. He was mumbling something about "revenge"
and "better boots" by the time we headed home.

All and all we had a good time. Would have been nice to bag a few, but this is a landslide better than hanging Christmas lights.

What do they eat out there? I know a couple of guys who hunt that far south but I always figured that they had some areas with a little bit of grass. Have you opened up a crop? Ohh and congrats on the finds. I have yet to find that many birds on one outing this year, or at least in utah.

Looks to be some type of seeds. I haven't killed one this year. When I do (and that's a big if the way I shoot), I'll take a photo of the crop and post it.

Just giving you a hard time. I can't wrap my mind around chukars existing in an area with no cheat grass. That looks like a lot of fun to chase them around in that type of country.

Actually we do have some cheat grass in the areas we hunt down south. If you ever hunted around Austin Nevada or Ely, the area we hunted just north of Vegas doesn't look too much different. The hills are just steeper in Austin and Ely. That's a great photo of a Gambel's. I'm gonna have to add it to my website! :)
