Nebraska Groouse/Prairie Chicken Opener

Went out this morning with my best (human) friend, and our 4 Vizslas. Got a limit of 3 birds each in about an hour. We hunted one 160 acre CRP field(public). In this pic are my two Vs Ozzie 4 1/2 months(purple collar), and Zoey 5 yrs. The pup truely shows talent. Many points, one back, and two retrieves to hand. I was one proud papa. Saw tons of grouse, and the most quail Ive EVER seen in Nebraska.

Two chickens and one sharpie for me , quit hunting at 10 am, to darn hot. I did also put up a few more chickens out of range and a covey of 7 pheasants that were very young

Do you hunt the far eastern counties? I am looking at the CRP map and see quite a bit of walk in hunting. My Brother and Iwere thinking of doing this on sunday of the opening weekend. Any thoughts? the crp walk in stuff is thin farther south where we usuallly hunt.

I hunt in Dixon, Dakota, Wayne, Cedar, Knox, Cuming, Stanton, Antelope, and Thurston counties. Most pheasant hunting is in Dixon/Cedar/Dakota. I think I know the area you are talking about (Dixon co) just Northwest of Laurel about 15 miles or so. If you can hold off untill after deer season(Nov 16, I think) you would be MUCH better off. unfotunately EVERYONE sees the large tracts up there. I hunt private ground across the road, and the MAP ground gets POUNDED all day, sunup to sundown. One group leaves, and another pulls up ALL DAY. There are birds there, but I wouldnt recomend hunting it early in season. If you wait, you can generally have it all to yourself later in the year.
